"Its about the cancer," she said softly as she sat down on her vanity stool. "Its good news...but then again its bad news."
"How can something be both good and bad? Just tell me what it is all ready!" Joey said as he jumped up and walked over to her, taking her right hand.
She turned her face away from him as she closed her eyes, thinking of a way to inform him of what she had to say. "Before I tell you what I found out, remember nothing is for certain."
He nodded his head before raising his eyebrows up, signaling for her to continue. She took a deep breath before turning her face back around so she could look into his eyes. "The doctors called me today with something they've come across. Its an experimental type of surgery that can slow the cancer down, if not completely stop it."
"That's great!" Joey said as his smile returned.
"That's not all, Joe," she said, still not showing any excitement. She sighed as she continued. "Joey..the doctor said its highly expensive and its not guaranteed to work. It could also have reverse effects if just even a small something goes wrong..it could cause the cancer's growth to spread faster."
Joey's smile never faulted. "This gives us a chance, baby."
"Joe..I don't want to get my hope up. It could very easily take me away from you guys faster or it could completely cure it. I'd have to go to France for it..and its very expensive."
"I don't care how much it costs, Samara. We'll be on a plane tomorrow morning."
She chuckled as she touched his cheek. "We can't leave tomorrow. I have to go to the doctor tomorrow afternoon..the only thing is I don't want to take Katherine overseas."
"I'm sure she could stay with Melissa and JC..who by the way are engaged."
"That's terrific," Samara said as her voice lightened. "Joey..do you think I should go through with this surgery?"
"Its the only option we've got baby," he said as he pulled her up from the stool and placed his arms around her body. "I'm sure it will help you."
"But..what if it doesn't?" she asked, sighing as she rested her head on his shoulder. Part of her wanted to believe that this was the miracle that they had been praying for, but she just wouldn't allow herself to get her hopes up, only to have them crushed by having a negative outcome. But she was at the point to where she was willing to try almost anything.
"You've got to have a positive train of thought, baby. We'll talk to the doctor about this and see if he thinks you should go through with it."
"Joe..I hope it works."
"Me too, Sam," he whispered as he kissed the top of her forehead. "I don't want to let go of you."
"To be honest with you, Mrs. Fatone..since we've went through every other option, I personally think you should go through with this. There is a pretty good chance that it will help," Doctor Hewlett told her as he reached up to remove his glasses.
"Then if you think I should go through with it, then I'll do it," she said as she gripped Joey's hand tighter. "When is my appointment to see the doctor overseas?"
"I can probably have one set up for you as soon as Friday."
"Then Friday it is," she said before standing up and extending her hand. "Thank you for all your help, Dr. Hewlett."
"I just hope this helps."
"I think we all feel that way," Joey half heartedly joked before shaking the doctor's hand and following Samara out of the office. Once the two of them had placed their seatbelts on, Joey pulled the car out of the parking lot, heading to JC's to pick up Katherine. "The doctor seems to think this will work."
"He seemed to think the last five treatments we did would work..and look at how they failed."
"Like I told you earlier..you have to think positive."
She sighed before resting her head against the window, the glass feeling cool to her skin. "I don't want to get my hopes up only to have them crushed. That's why I can't get my hopes up about this..I'm just going to go in it with an attitude of what happens, happens."
Joey hit the steering wheel as he turned to look at her. "Damn it, Samara.. that's not the type of attitude to have!"
"Its the only one I CAN have!" she yelled to him, feeling her hands starting to shake in anger when he didn't understand where she was coming from. "Joey..I'm fighting this with all that I can but you've got to understand. The past six months have been up and down..only to go spiraling down..this is my last hope. I don't want to be up on cloud nine thinking this is the cure that I've prayed every night for, only to go plunging down when I realize that it won't help..that nothing can help."
"I'm not saying that you need to walk into that French office later on this week with your head held high thinking you're going to walk out of there cured..but I wish you'd at least try and have hope."
She closed her eyes and kept her mouth shut because she didn't want to argue with him. It seemed that lately, that was all the two of them would do and it was over the same subject everytime. She was tired of worrying about things and she was also tired of fighting with Joey over every little thing. True, she had always been stubborn, but she knew lately it was just getting to be out of control. But she didn't think he understood how many thoughts raced through her mind everyday, most of them being negative.
"Samara," he said, breaking through her concentration. "Don't be mad at me, Sweetie."
"I'm not mad," she told him, never opening her eyes. "I'm just thinking about some things."
"Sam..you know that if you want to talk about them..I'm here for you."
"I know," she told him softly as she opened her eyes to look over at him. "Its just something you wouldn't understand."
"But you can try.."
"No, Joe..you have enough on your mind right now," she said interrupting him. "I'll deal with this small problem."
The cancer was slowly pulling the two of them apart. At one time, they were able to talk to each other about everything, but now it seemed as if they could never connect on the same level. They were both stubborn and wouldn't back down from what they thought which often lead to problems. But deep down inside, they both knew that they needed each other more than ever at that moment. The love that they shared was the only thing that was keeping them alive and they were going to need it to fall back on in the future.
