"Whoa, Joe," JC said, letting out a little laugh. "I've watched Kat many times..I know the routine. You just focus your attention on Samara and this surgery and I'll take care of short stuff."
"ANGEL!" Justin yelled as he ran through the door, scooping up the little girl in his arms. "Your uncle Justy is here to save the day."
The little girl giggled before waving to her dad as Justin took her outside the house. Joey watched her small body disappear before sighing as he turned his attention back to JC. "Keep my little girl safe, JC."
"I would rather hurt myself than let harm come to that little girl and you know that."
Joey glanced down at his watch before nodding his head. "I have to get going. We have a plane to catch in about three hours and Samara always wants to get there really early."
"Call us when you guys land," JC told him as they walked to the door. "And I know..make sure to feed Kat something healthy for breakfast."
"Exactly," Joey said before briefly hugging JC and walking around to the side of the house where he scooped Katherine up in his arms."You be a good girl for Uncle Jace and Melissa."
"I will, Daddy," she said before kissing his cheek and touching his nose with her finger.
"You be good kiddo," he said as he sat her down on the ground and smirked when she went running to a squatting Justin, who fell onto the ground when she jumped into his arms.
JC walked over to Justin and Katherine as the three of them watched Joey's car back out of the driveway. "I hope this surgery works."
"Me too, Justin," JC said before grinning down at Katherine. "How about we go play a game."
"Yay!" she said as she jumped up and down, causing JC to pick her up and carry her towards the house. "What are we gonna play?"
"I was thinking about...hide and go seek..but we're gonna play in the house that way Justin won't cheat."
"Hey!" Justin said before rolling his eyes. "I'm not the cheater..its Chris that cheats!"
"Whatever," JC said before winking at Katherine who giggled before reaching up to play with his hair, giving one of the strands a slight tug. "Oww..short stuff..new rule: Don't pull anyone's hair."
"I've never been here..its beautiful," Samara said as the two of them stepped outside of the airport. There were people moving all around them, reminding her of the many trips that they had made to New York City together. The only difference between New York City and Paris was the many displays of art.
"I've only been here a few times, but I do know that they have excellent food."
She laughed as she leaned into him as they waited for the rental car to be pulled up. "God I love you Joe..I even love that huge appetite that you bring along everywhere with you."
He chuckled as he reached down and poked his stomach. "It takes skill to get one of these babies."
"That skill is being a pig!" she joked before loading her stuff into the black car that had been pulled around for the two. They had been lucky to escape to France without being escorted by one of the bodyguards that usually escorted them everywhere that they went. But a bodyguard wasn't necessary because the public didn't know they were in the city.
"What time is your appointment?"
"I have to check into the hotel and then call Dr. Jacques to let him know that I arrived OK..and I think I'm supposed to go in tonight for a briefing or something like that."
"Are you scared?" he asked her as the car pulled away from the airport.
She nodded her head before trying to put on a brave face. "But I'm going to do this..I'm doing it for my little girl...by the way..you gave JC everything that I told you to, right?"
"Yes," he said before resting his head against hers. "Sam.."
"Yes, Joe?"
"Can we eat before we go to the doctor?"
She chuckled before kissing his cheek. "That we can do."
"Its important that you understand that this procedure is purely experimental...there are many dangers that are associated with it. But I feel confident that it can be performed."
"So..you're basically saying that I'm the only person this has ever been done on?"
The doctor nodded his head before running a hand through his hair. "We've tested it on animals..and it worked..but you'll be the first human we've ever done it on."
"That makes me feel a lot better," she whispered as she looked over at Joey, her eyes wide with fear.
"The one thing I don't understand is how this surgery can speed up the rate of the cancer," Joey said as he gave Samara's hand a reassuring squeeze.
"Its very difficult to explain," the doctor said, his French accent causing him to speak very slowly. "Its not likely to happen, but there is a twenty percent chance of it happening. There's a forty percent chance of it healing the cancer and then there's another forty percent chance it won't do anything."
Samara nodded her head, understanding completely what the doctor was telling her. "Is it OK if I discuss this with my husband before I make a final choice?"
The doctor nodded his head before getting up and leaving his office. Joey looked over at Samara before reaching up to brush away a strand of hair. "What do you think?"
"Its the only chance I have..of course I'm going to do it."
Joey admired her brave attitude that she possessed. She knew that under that facade, she was scared to death of what might happen, but she was a fighter and Joey knew she wouldn't go out without fighting with everything that she had. "Then we'll tell the doctor that you're going to go through with this."
"Are you scared, Joe?"
"Of course I'm scared..but I'm so proud of you for taking a chance," he said as the doctor walked back into the room.
"Dr. Jacques...I'm going to do it."
The doctor smiled slightly before pushing a printed document across the desk. "You have to sign this before we can finalize anything. It simply states that this is an experimental procedure and that we aren't held liable for the outcomes...its just something that we have to make patients sign."
She picked up the pen and with a shaky hand, scribbled her name down on the line before pushing it over to Joey so he could sign. Once their names were signed on the document, there was no turning back.
