chapter 14

Leigh walked about half a mile till she got to the lake nearby.

She sat down and dug her feet into the sand. She wrapped her arms around her legs and laid her head on her knees and softly cried to herself.

About 5 minutes later she felt someone place their hand on her shoulder. She looked up and saw Brian with tissues and a warm smile.

"Thank you." she said taking the tissues.

Brian quietly sat down next to Leigh. He didn't say a word because he knew she was the one who needed to talk.

After Leigh wiped her eyes, she took a deep breath and looked over at Brian.

"You know, I hate this. I mean, Nick liked me, I didn't like him. Then I like him, and he tells me we are really close friends. That's why I stopped kissing him. If we're only friends then we shouldn't kiss, right? And now we like each other...so why can't we just be together?" Leigh said starting to cry again.

Brian put his arm around Leigh to comfort her.

"Leigh, it will work out. Love always does." he said quietly.

"Yeah but now Nick thinks I hate him. And I don't, at all. I care about him." Leigh said staring out at the calm lake.

They sat there quietly, Brian comforting her.

"Do you want me to drive you home?" Brian offered.

"Yeah, I just can't face him right now." Leigh said through tears.

When Brian and Leigh got up, she hugged him tightly.

"Thanks, I always knew you were a wonderful friend." she said.

They went back to the camp site, and Nick and Anna were gone.

Brian left them a note, while Leigh gathered her stuff.

The whole way home neither said a word, then when he was at her house she thanked him again. Then she apologized for everything.

When Leigh got to her house, she unpacked, took a shower and went to bed for the day.
