***ANGEL IN DISGUISE***

CHAPTER 16

We arrived at the restaurant. It was a secluded one. It was also late at night so we really didn't have to worry about reporters or fans following us. We sat and ate dinner. While we were eating, I started to think about the phone call from Steve. I still couldn't believe that he had the nerve to call after what he had done to me. I hoped that he would take my threat seriously and never call again. Nick saw that I was deep in thought, "Hey, penny for your thoughts." I smiled, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to seem distant." "You look like you were really thinking of something there. Are you okay," Nick asked. "Oh, I'm fine, babe." "Are you sure," he asked. "Yeah, I'm sure," I replied. "You know, you haven't been feeling well for the past few days and you've really been tired," Nick said. "Yeah, I have been but I don't know why," I replied. “Well, remember when you mentioned kids,” Nick asked. I looked at him curiously with a smile. “Yes, I remember,” I said. “Well, don’t you think that you might be …..,” Nick kind of trailed off. “Pregnant,” I asked. Nick remembered his conversation with Howie and AJ. He smiled, “Yeah.” I realized that Nick might be right. I hadn’t been feeling well and I have been really tired lately. Then I remembered the pains I was having. The pain was in my upper stomach area. But still the fact that I have been tired lately got me wondering. And I did miss my period. “Annie,” Nick called. “Yeah,” I replied. “Don’t you think that you should go to the doctor,” Nick suggested. I knew that I had to go to the doctor for the test but I didn’t want Nick to find out about the pains I was having. “Yeah, I guess I should,” I smiled. Nick took my hand in between his hands and kissed it as he looked at me. “Wow, a father,” Nick said. I smiled as I watch stars appear in Nick’s eyes. “You’ll be a great daddy,” I told him. He smiled, “And you’ll be a great mommy.” After a while, Nick went ahead and paid the tab. We started our way out to the Durango. When we were half way there, Nick walked ahead of me to open the car door. Just then, a reporter shoved a mike in my face while his cameraman flooded me with a light. “Mrs. Carter, a couple of questions, please.” I almost fell back from the surprise attack. “I have no comment,” I replied. “Come on now. Nick Carter fans are gonna wanna know why you married such a young guy,” the reporter said with a smile. Just then Nick ran up and pushed the light and camera down and the reporter away. “Will you please leave us alone,” Nick said. “Mr. Carter,” the reporter said as he shoved the mike in Nick’s face while the cameraman flooded Nick with the light this time. “You’re fans are gonna wanna know the facts of your marriage to an older woman. A woman 13 years older than you,” the reporter said. “Don’t you guys ever let up,” Nick asked angrily. Nick put his arms around me and tucked my head into his chest as he walked me to the car. The reporter and his cameraman persistently followed. Nick didn’t care that his face would be shown on t.v. He was more concerned for me. Nick quickly got me into the car. And quickly ran around to get inside. The reporter was on my side still persistent. Nick started up the car and backed out of the parking lot and drove off.

Nick sighed, “Damn reporters!” I took his hand. “Hey, don’t worry about it. We were expecting this, remember,” I said. “You’re a celebrity, Nick. You’re a Backstreet Boy. It comes with the territory,” I explained. “Are you okay,” he asked. “I’m fine,” I replied. “Well, just in case we’re pregnant, I don’t want you to be under any stress of any kind,” Nick said concerned. “Nick, I’m fine,” I repeated. Nick pulled me close to him. As he pulled me close, I snuggled my face into his neck and began tracing kisses. I noticed that Nick wasn’t driving home. “Hey, where are we going,” I asked. “To have a little privacy,” Nick smiled. It took about an hour to get to a little bed and breakfast place. It was sitting on top of a cliff with the view of the ocean and the night sky. Nick pulled into the parking lot and hopped out of the car to go check in. He came back out and waved the key at me with a smile. I smiled back. He helped me out of the car. We walked up to the room. The room was cozy. It wasn’t big but it was perfect. There was a beautiful king size bed to the right with an old-fashioned bed frame and two beautifully old-fashioned nightstands on either side. To the left was a fireplace with a fire already roaring and crackling. The room was dimly lit. It reminded me of the cottage in the Bahamas because you looked straight ahead from the door and there was a huge window covered with a beautifully old style curtain. I walked up to the window and peeked out. The moon was shining and the sky was starry. “De Ja Vu,” I whispered. Nick heard me whisper but didn’t quite hear what I had said, “What did you say?” “I said ‘De Ja Vu’,” I replied. Nick smiled. As I was looking out, Nick put his arms around me. “I love you,” he whispered. “I love you, too,” I whispered back. He turned me around to face him and just as he always did, he began brushing his lips against mine. He found my lips and we kissed passionately. He slowly walked me to the bed and laid me down. His hands searching my body and my fingers running through his hair. Our breathing became heavy. Nick then pulled away, “Will this be okay?” “What,” I asked. “Well, if we’re pregnant ….,” he said as I cut him off with another passionate kiss. “It will be fine,” I whispered in between kisses. Nick removed his shirt. The urgency between us became stronger. I ran my hands down his smooth muscular back as he pushed against me. I wrapped one leg around him as his hand traveled from top to bottom. That night we melted into eachother until we fell asleep spent in eachother’s arms.

CHAPTER 17

I awoke to the sound of the surf hitting the beach. I pulled myself out of Nick’s embrace and walked to the window to admire the view. I opened the window to let some fresh sea breeze blow in. The breeze felt good against my face. I turned around to see Nick still asleep. He was so beautiful. Since I met him, he never cared about himself. He always cared about me. His concerns were always for me. I watched as he began to stir to life. With his eyes still closed, his hands began searching the bed. When he realized that I wasn’t there, he opened his eyes to find me watching him. “Good morning, sunshine,” I said with a smile. I walked over to the bed and plopped myself on top of Nick. “Hey,” Nick said sleepily as he kissed my lips. “How long have you been up,” he asked. “Not long,” I replied. “How are you feeling,” he asked. “Hmmmm, after last night, I feel absolutely wonderful,” I replied. Nick smiled sleepily at me as he hugged me. “You hungry,” I asked. “Yeah,” Nick replied. “Well, get up and get some clothes on. I’m hungry myself,” I said as I playfully tickled him. “You,” Nick yelled smiling and rolled me over so that I was laying beneath him. We tickled eachother until the moment became heated again.

We finally both got up. I hopped into the shower ahead of Nick while he was putting in our order for breakfast out on the balcony of the bed and breakfast place. Nick later followed me into the shower. We sensuously bathed eachother for a while. I finished showering and hopped out before Nick did. “Hey, it’s daylight. Do you think we’ll run into any reporters or fans,” I asked. “I hope not,” Nick replied. Nick finally hopped out of the shower. We both put comfortable clothes on and then headed down to the breakfast area. Nick gave the young lady our name and she led us to a private balcony that had a view of the ocean. Breakfast was immediately served once we sat down. There was fruit, scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast, orange juice …. everything. I only realized then that I was really hungry. “Are you gonna call the doctor for an appointment today,” Nick asked. “Yeah, as soon as we get home,” I replied. “How late are you,” Nick asked. I counted my fingers, “Oh about three weeks now.” Nick smiled. “Wouldn’t that be amazing if we were pregnant,” he asked. “Well, we might be. Don’t get your hopes up. I’ve got a very irregular cycle,” I explained. “I know, I know,” Nick replied, “but I can’t help but think about us having a baby.” “We will have many babies, Nick,” I said with a smile as I looked at him. We finished breakfast and headed down to the beach. As we walked the surf, we talked about what to do when and if we ran into reporters or fans and we discussed having a family. Nick was really excited about the idea of having a family. I was, too. I could only imagine what having another NICK running around would be like. Nick noticed the smile on my face. He always seemed to know when I was in thought. “What are you thinking,” he asked. “What it would be like to have another NICK running around the house,” I said with a smile. Nick chuckled, “You and AJ must be on the same wave length.” “What,” I said looking at him puzzled. “Well, AJ was wondering the same thing as you. What it would be like to have another ‘me’ running around,” he said chuckling. I laughed as I hugged him, “You know, I wouldn’t mind if we had a hundred of you running around.” We exchanged kisses for a bit and then finished our walk on the beach.

As soon as we finished our beach walk, we headed back to the room to get our things together and head home. We really didn’t have much since we came straight here after dinner last night. When we finally got home, there were tons of reporters at the front gate. Nick drove around to the back and to our surprise, the reporters as well as the fans discovered the back entrance. Nick picked up the car phone and called into the house as we drove up to the gate. Kevin answered, “Hello.” “Hey Kev, it’s Nick. Man, both the front and back entrances have reporters and fans waiting. The car is surrounded by them right now,” Nick explained. “Alright Nick. I’ll get security up there. Just stay put,” Kevin replied. We waited for a few minutes as the reporters and fans tapped on the car windows. Finally security got there. The gates opened and we inched our way up the driveway. The guys had really great security. They managed to keep the reporters and fans away from the car as we drove through the gate. Nick parked the car along side AJ’s. I started to feel the pain again on our way home but I didn’t tell Nick. Once we were inside the house, I was gonna let Nick know that I needed to take a nap. “Damn,” Nick said. Kevin had met us at the door, “Man, those reporters have been here since last night. It was unbelievable. They were asking about you and Annie,” Kevin explained. “Yeah, I know,” Nick replied, “A reporter manage to corner us at the restaurant after dinner last night. They just never let up.” Brian walked into the room, “Hey you two. You finally get through those reporters?” “Yeah, Kev sent security to help out,” Nick replied. “Yeah, they tried to corner me and Leighann at the gate,” Brian said, “They were asking all kind of questions about you marrying Annie.” Nick shook his head. “Nick, I’m gonna go upstairs and lay down,” I said. “Are you feeling sick again,” Nick asked concerned. “No, I’m just tired, you know,” I replied with a half smile. The pain in my stomach was growing intense and I wanted to get upstairs as soon as I could. “Okay, go ahead. I’ll be up in a bit,” Nick replied. I nodded my head and headed upstairs.

As I was entering our room, the phone rang. I had totally forgotten about Steve’s call until I picked the phone up. “Hello there sweetie,” the voice said. My skin began to crawl again. “What do you want, Steve? I told you not to call here ever,” I said angrily. “Why is your husband there,” he asked sarcastically. “No, he is downstairs,” I answered. “You didn’t tell him about me,” he asked in a firm tone. “You go and get married without telling this guy about me? You are still mine,” Steve said evily. “Steve, I am not yours and never will be yours,” I yelled into the phone. “Well, if I can’t have you then he can’t either,” Steve said, “I don’t give a damn if he is the richest asshole in the world. You belong to me and no one else.” “Please do not call here ever again,” I said fuming, “if you do not stop calling here, I will report you to the police and file harassment charges against you.” I slammed the phone down. The pain in my stomach grew more intense. I crumpled to the ground and began to sob as Nick walked in. Nick saw me and immediately ran to my aide. “Annie, what’s wrong? What are you crying about,” Nick asked aloud. The pain was really intense now but I intended to not let Nick know about the pains I was having and I definitely wasn’t going to tell him about the calls from Steve. I wiped the tears from my face, “I’m fine, I’m alright.” “No you are not. What is wrong, Annie,” Nick asked firmly. “Nothing, nothing is wrong. Really I’m fine,” I said. I had to think of some excuse quick. “I was just ….. just …… thinking about the baby we might have. I just got overwhelmed by the idea. I really want to give you a baby,” I said with a fake smile. “Annie, don’t lie to me,” Nick said. “Really, I’m not lying. I’m fine. I’m gonna call the doctor right now and make an appointment. We’ll find out in a couple of days.” “I’ll call for you,” Nick said. The guys had walked into the room when they heard me sobbing and Nick’s firm voice. “Hey, what’s going on,” Brian asked as him and the guys looked on. “Yeah, what’s up, man,” AJ asked. “You guys, I’m fine, really, I’m fine,” I said. “I walked in on her sobbing,” Nick explained to the guys, “she seems to be okay. I’m gonna call the doctor right now and make an appointment for her.” “Yeah, you better,” Howie said, “if she’s pregnant, you gotta find out if the baby is okay.” Nick then picked up the phone and began to dial. The guys went back downstairs when they heard Nick talking to the nurse. As for me, I just sat on the side of the bed and thought about the horrible call from Steve. I knew that I couldn’t let Nick know that Steve had been calling. I just wasn’t sure how Nick was gonna take it if he knew so I made a pack to myself that I would keep it to myself.

CHAPTER 18

“Yes, I need to make an appointment for my wife, please,” Nick told the nurse on the other end. “Okay, what’s her name,” the nurse asked. “Annie Carter,” Nick replied. “Okay, and you are Mr. Carter,” the nurse asked. “Yes, I am,” Nick replied. “Okay, Mr. Carter, what seems to be the problem,” asked the nurse. “Well, my wife may be pregnant and we would like to check on that,” Nick told the nurse. “Oh, okay, let me see what we have here,” the nurse said. The other end of the phone was quiet for a bit as the nurse looked at the schedule to see what was available. “Nick,” I said. “They’re looking for an appointment for you,” Nick replied. “Okay, we have an opening tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.,” the nurse told Nick. “Great, we’ll take that one,” Nick quickly replied. Nick finished up the phone call and then hung up. “Okay, tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., you have an appointment with Dr. Miles Edwards,” Nick told me. “Okay, great,” I replied. I felt so drained and so tired as if I had run a marathon. And the pain in my stomach was still there. It took all the strength I had to keep it to myself. Nick had a career to tend to and he didn’t need to worry about me right now. Nick and the guys had sky rocketed to the top of the charts and on almost every music video channel, their video was number one. I couldn’t ruin that for him. He was at the prime of his career. But I knew I would have to tell the doctor about the pain in my stomach. It was getting too intense and it was scaring me.

The next morning, we all had breakfast together. Kevin cooked up some eggs, bacon, hash browns and some toast. We all sat at the table and ate while we chit chatted about different things. They had discussed some business, too. “Hey guys, don’t forget. We got a t.v. appearance to do in New York in the next couple of weeks,” AJ said. “Yeah, we’ll be down there for about 3 days,” Brian followed. Nick looked over at me, “You wanna come, Annie?” “Sure, why not? I’ve always wanted to shop the stores of New York,” I said. I paused for minute then remembered, “Nick, you think it’s okay? I mean, news has gotten out that you’ve married an older woman. They’re probably gonna ask you something about that. I’m sure a lot of reporters and fans will be out there.” Nick thought for a bit. “Well, we see the doctor today. Let’s see what we find out first and then we’ll decide, okay,” Nick suggested. “Okay,” I replied, “sounds good to me.” “Little brother, don’t worry, man. We’ve got your back in case they start asking all those questions,” Kevin said. “Thanks Kev. But you know, I ain’t afraid to tell them anything. I’ll tell them the truth. If they don’t like it then tough,” Nick replied, “if they are all true fans, they’ll support me on this.” We finished our breakfast then headed out to the doctor’s.

We went ahead and took the limo because we didn’t want to chance running into reporters again. We finally reached the doctor’s office and checked in. Nick picked up a magazine that had a picture of them on the front cover. I took his hand and smiled as he looked over at me. “Wow, you’re a BIG celebrity,” I said giggling. “I guess so,” Nick replied as he chuckled. The nurse at the front desk was about twenty-three. Her eyes grew wide when she finally realized who Nick was. “Uh oh,” I said. Nick looked at me puzzled. “It’s a fan,” I whispered. I pointed out the young nurse at the desk. She had gotten up and grabbed a pad of paper and a pen. She cautiously walked up to Nick, “I didn’t realize who you were until a couple minutes ago and I’m sure you get this all the time but can I have your autograph, Nick,” she asked shyly. Nick flashed her that melting smile of his and said, “Sure.” He took the pad and pen from her. “What’s your name,” he asked. “Ana,” she said shyly. Nick began to scribble something on the pad and then handed it to her when he finished. “Um, is this your wife, Nick,” she asked shyly. “Yes it is, Ana. This is my wife, Annie,” Nick said. “Well, I just wanted you to know that I support you on your marriage. Age doesn’t matter as long as two people love eachother for who they are. I’m really happy for you. Congratulations,” Ana said. “Why thank you. That is really nice of you to say,” Nick replied. “You’re welcome. Well, I better get back to the desk. It was nice meeting you,” Ana said. “And it was nice meeting you,” Nick replied. I smiled at the young woman as she walked away. “Well, that was really nice of her,” I said. “Yeah, it was. Now that is a TRUE fan,” Nick replied.

After about fifteen minutes, Dr. Edwards had called us into his office. We all sat down. “Okay Mrs. Carter, what seems to be the problem,” Dr. Edwards asked. “Well, we think we might be pregnant,” I replied. Dr. Edwards smiled. “Okay, how late are you,” he asked. “About three weeks,” I replied. “Well, I guess we’ll just have to find out, won’t we,” he said cheerfully. He wrote up a lab slip, stamped the word STAT on it and had me go down to the lab to take a pregnancy test. It was the normal urine pregnancy test but the blood serum pregnancy test. We returned to his office and sat in the waiting room. After a few minutes he called us in. “Well, the test came back negative,” he said. “Negative,” I asked. “Yes, Mrs. Carter,” Dr. Edwards replied. I was so disappointed. I had grown to love the idea of being pregnant with Nick’s baby. A couple of tears rolled down my face as I looked over at Nick. He smiled and held my hand. “It’s okay, babe. We can try again. Like you said, we have plenty of time to have babies,” Nick said smiling. He was right. “Nick, could you step out for a bit. I wanna talk to Dr. Edwards,” I asked. “Sure. I’ll meet you outside,” Nick replied. Nick got up and shook Dr. Edwards hands thanking him and then walked out the door. When the door closed, I looked over at Dr. Edwards concerned. “Mrs. Carter, is there something wrong,” Dr. Edwards asked. “Well, I really don’t want my husband to know about this. He has a career to run. So, please promise me that this is only between you and I,” I requested. Dr. Edwards looked concerned, “Okay, it will be confidential.” “Well, for the last few days or I should say the last couple of weeks, I have been having this intense pain in my stomach. At first, I thought it was just a normal stomachache but it’s not. The pain is so intense that it makes me keel over sometimes. I break out in a sweat and loose color,” I explained. Dr. Edwards put a hand on his chin as he listened to me. “Where is the pain in your stomach,” he asked. I pointed it out to him the area that the pain would appear. “Hmmmm, have you been eating regularly,” he asked. “Well, yes but sometimes I have no appetite. I’m not hungry when I should be hungry,” I replied. “Hmmmm, why don’t you lay down on the examining table,” he suggested. I did as he told me. He lifted my shirt just underneath my breast and started pushing down on certain areas on my abdomen. He felt around for a few minutes. “Well, it’s pretty tender in this area,” he said pointing to it. “Are you under any stress,” he asked. “Well, no,” I replied. He went back to his desk and grabbed a couple of lab slips and started writing and checking boxes. I sat up on the examining table as he approached me. “When you get a chance, I want you to get these labs done,” he explained. “Okay, but I’ll have to do it when my husband isn’t home,” I said. “That’s fine because I know that you don’t want your husband to know about this. Although you should tell him,” Dr. Edwards said. “I know, I know. But he just has a lot going on right now with his singing career. I don’t want to bother him with this,” I explained. “Well, he will find out sooner or later,” Dr. Edwards said, “you’re gonna have to tell him sooner or later.” “Yeah but until that time comes, I’d like to keep it confidential,” I said. “Okay, you can garauntee he won’t hear it from me,” Dr. Edwards said with a smile. “Thanks,” I replied. I tucked the lab slips into my purse and shook his hand. Nick was waiting out in the waiting room just like he said he would. Nick stood up and we started to walk out the door. “What did you guys talk about,” Nick asked. “Oh, nothing. I just asked him for some tips on how to get pregnant especially if you have an irregular cycle,” I replied. Nick smiled and said with a grin, “Well, could we start using those tips when we get home?” I play punched him in his stomach as we both laughed. “You just never quit do you,” I said. We both got into the car and headed home.
