“So Dr. Suff,” Amanda said to Laura Suff after Nick’s check-up. Nick was now back in his room, talking on the phone with his band mates. “How’s Nick?”
“Actually, there’s quite a lot of progress. His wound had healed so fast that now I think if we give him a few more weeks time, I think that he can do the operation immediately. But it really depends on later check-ups, if his condition gets worse, then he may stay here for a longer amount of time than he had expected. Some people stay here for years and they are never well enough to do the operation or some are too weak to do it. Some people had very successful operations but then they had side effects. But there were also quite a lot of people that had no side effects. I think that Nick’s going to be one of them. Or, I strongly hope that he will. Most importantly, don’t let him get emotionally depressed, your mood really affects his healing rate too.” Laura took a sip from the cup of coffee she held in her hand.
“So… you mean he has a higher chance of recovering than most people do?”
“Sort of, but not exactly. He is very strong, I realize, but then if something depressing happens, it may affect him and his ability to heal properly.”
“What do you mean?” Amanda stopped dead in her tracks, “You mean that he’ll probably never recover if he gets depressed?” Amanda asked incredulously, not believing a single word she was hearing.
“That’s another way of putting it.” Laura took another sip of coffee as a mechanical voice suddenly filled the corridor, it said, “Dr. Brown, Dr. Suff, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Adams. Meeting in the conference room now. Dr. Brown, Dr. Suff, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Adams. Meeting in the conference room now. Dr. Halter, Dr. Bunton, there is an emergency at the childrens’ ward. Dr. Halter, Dr. Bunton, there is an emergency at the childrens’ ward.” “Listen, I’ve gotta go. Take my stuff and put is on my desk please.” Laura said hurriedly after the announcement was made and dumped her belongings into Amanda’s arms then rushed off.
Amanda stared at her back as Dr. Suff walked quickly away from her. She was getting further and further away in the distance. Amanda continued to stare sadly until she could see no more of Dr. Suff in the corridor. Sighing heavily, she turned and walked towards the direction of Dr. Suff’s office in small depressed steps.
