Amanda Wilkins awoke from the sound of her constant alarm. Her head bumped onto the bunk bed above her, “Ouch! Damn it!” she cursed, rubbing her forehead. She casually glanced down at her dresser and caught sight of her alarm clock. “Shit!” She cried out, knowing that she had less time to get ready than she had planned to. Jumping out of bed, she pulled off her baggy, long T-shirt and flung open her closet door. “What to wear, what to wear?” she mumbled repeatedly. Closing her eyes, she randomly chose an outfit. She opened her eyes, “Ugh,” she commented when her eyes were laid upon a long sleeved red shirt and a pair of green jeans, “Perfect for Christmas,” she muttered, deciding that choosing clothes with her eyes open was more reliable. Finally, she chose to wear her white spaghetti strap top with her black miniskirt. Looking into her mirror, she smiled with confidence and hurried to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Showing her perfect straight teeth, she applied on a coat of lip gloss. She grabbed her ‘Sugar’ magazine and flipped through it until she reached to the page where it had all the latest hairstyles. She chose a hard one and repeated the steps numerous times until she had finally got it. She smiled with approval and got ready to insert the clips. “Finally!” she exclaimed almost at the exact time as the phone rang. “Damn it!” she cursed again as she tried to fit in the clips in a hurry. Seeing that she was making her hair look more worse than that morning, she let her brown hair down as she ran out of the bathroom to her parents’ room to answer the phone. “Wish they’d get my phone fixed,” she thought grimly. Grabbing the telephone from its cradle, she said, “Hello?”

“Hey Amanda!” A male voice came through the static.

Knowing who the caller is, she smiled, “Hey Nick.”

“Listen Amanda, I wanted to tell you that I can’t make it to your place tonight. I’m still in Germany,” Nick’s voice struggled through the static.

Amanda’s face fell, “But Nick–”

“Yeah I know it’s your birthday today, and I promise I’ll make up for it when I get back, kay?” Nick said apologetically.

“Yeah,” Amanda said softly.

“What?”

“Never mind,” Amanda dismissed.

“Okay, and happy birthday Amanda,” Nick said.

“I’m sure I’ll be real happy,” Amanda muttered dryly.

“What?” Nick repeated, “Oh listen, I’ve got to go now. Bye.” Nick hung up with out even waiting for an answer.

“Bye,” Amanda whispered as she settled the phone back to its cradle. Sighing heavily, she walked back to her room slowly with heavy steps. Glancing into her mirror, she realized that a single tear had rolled down her cheek. She grabbed a tissue and wiped it. Just as she was about to change back into her pajamas, the phone rang again. “Geez, what does he want now?” Amanda walked back into her parents’ room to answer the phone. “Hello?” she said tiredly.

“Hey Amanda!” A cheery voice came through.

“Hey Mich,” replied Amanda dully. It was her best friend, that had just returned from her summer holiday in Japan.

“Why so down?” Michelle asked.

“He can’t make it today.”

“Great!” Amanda gasped, “I mean, that means you can come to my place instead,” Michelle finished.

“Okay, I’ve got nothing to do anyway,” Amanda agreed.

“Great, see you soon, bye,” Michelle hung up.

“God, she’s like that too,” She rolled her eyes as she placed the phone back. Running back into her room, she gave herself a small sympathetic smile, knowing that she finally has something to look forward to today. She picked up her bag and made her way downstairs, not bothering to fix her hair. Digging around her bag, she found a small green brush and ran it through her hair. Down in the kitchen, she grabbed an apple off the table and wiped it on her shirt. Biting on it, she noticed a small note on the fridge door. Taking it off, she realized it was a note from her parents, it read:

Amanda,
We have been invited to an exclusive ball out of town and will not be back until Monday morning. Party all you want but remember to clean up afterwards!

Love,
Mom and Dad

“Geez, some birthday I’m gonna have,” Amanda muttered dryly as she crumpled up the note and tossed it into the trash can. Flinging open the door, she walked out and headed for Michelle’s place.
