“Oh God, I can’t believe that, that just happened!” Geneve exclaimed on the phone. I was home, changing into my pajamas. And she was home… who knows what she’s doing? We went out for dinner, all 4– I mean all 7 of us, just seemed like it was 4 though.

“Yeah, I couldn’t believe that we actually saw them again. It was pretty cool today,” I replied calmly.

“Is something wrong?”

“Why do you always think there’s something wrong with me?” I asked, kind of annoyed.

“Well, whenever you’re just kind of quiet, it always makes me think that there’s something wrong with you. But everything went so right today!”

“So what are you going to do about Jason?”

There was silence on the other end and then Geneve asked like she didn’t understand, “What about him?”

“Geneve, the guy is like totally in love with you!”

“So?”

“Well, don’t you think that you owe him an explanation?”

“It’s not like he’s my anybody, right?”

“But I thought you said that he was your boyfriend or something.”

“Nah, I only wanted him to go with me to the club opening–”

“Because of his BMW,” I finished the sentence for her.

“Well, not exactly. I did kind of like him but I guess not enough to go out with him. You know what I mean?”

“It seems to me you’re using him.”

“Oh Rach! Why do you care so much about these things? It was just a simple little outing, all three of us, nothing serious.”

“I don’t get you.”

“You don’t need to. We’ve known each other since kindergarten and I still don’t know… what’s happening between you and Nick!” she suddenly changed the subject. But, I think that I was blushing so badly that I didn’t press on about Jason.

“What about him?” I asked quietly.

“We all know that he likes you and you like him!” Geneve cried out. All I know is that I bet I was blushing so hard. I could feel my face getting hot and I bet I looked redder than a tomato.

“That’s not true. I just happen to like him as a friend, and even if I did like him, he would never like me. I mean, look at me, a simple little girl, he couldn’t care less.” There was a little beep sound, a call coming in, “Hey hold on Geneve, I’ve got a call coming in, alright?”

“Yeah sure.”

“Hello?”

“Hi, may I speak to Rachel please?”

“Uh…” I hesitated, I didn’t want to get my hopes up but this voice was extremely familiar, “Yeah. Who’s this?”

“Hey, it’s Nick. How’s it going?”

I couldn’t believe it. The hottest guy on earth just called me. My heart was beating so fast that I could barely talk, “Um, great, on the phone with Geneve and everything.”

“Oh I hope I didn’t interrupt anything, I’ll call later.”

“No!” I said a little too quickly, “Uh, I mean, she’s busy anyway so um, yeah. So what’s up with you?”

“Oh nothing, just wondering if you were free today and we could go out.”

“Go out?” I was dreaming, “Yeah, where do you want to go?”

“It’s a surprise. I’ll pick you up at seven.”

Then he hung up. It was kind of rude but I wasn’t too put off about it… I was in such a daze that I totally forgot about Geneve and left the phone hanging. It was then that Geneve called my mobile that I realized I didn’t place the phone correctly. Basically I spent the entire afternoon on the phone with Geneve picking out what I should wear. It was quite hard, considering I didn’t know what we were doing. Geneve was kind of bummed that AJ didn’t call her and I must’ve pissed her off a little since I kept on going on and on about Nick. The doorbell rang and it was then that I realized that it was seven already.

“Gotta go Geneve! Nick’s here! And stop bumming about AJ, I’ll ask Nick about it and if AJ doesn’t agree to go out with you, we’ll bribe him!” I laughed but I didn’t get to hear her response because I hung up on her. Nick rang the doorbell again and I ran to the door at the speed of lightning.

Nick dropped me off at my place. It was just a little over eleven. A bit early actually. As I sat on my bed, I thought, the date wasn’t exactly thrilling. I mean, we did have fun and all but that was it. No spark. Nick was great fun and great to talk to… as a friend but I didn’t see anything more than that. In a way, I kind of felt disappointed. I sighed and took off my socks. Lying on my bed I wondered, am I really that desperate for a boyfriend? Nick’s great, but he’s no Josh.
