“Yo Nicky!” Brian called from his seat in the worn couch, “Phone!” He held up the receiver in the air but did not shift his gaze from the television.
“Don’t call me Nicky,” Nick protested as he ran down the stairs of Brian’s apartment and pulling up his pants at the same time. He grabbed the blue receiver from his best friend and held it up to his ear, “Hello?” He growled into it as if it was his worst enemy. “Uh, yeah, sorry mom. Just having a rough morning.” Nick said quickly and changed his attitude immediately to sweet, little, innocent, mother’s angel. A few minutes later, he shouted, “WHAT?! No way mom. Not ever. Here I am enjoying my few months of vacation in my busy schedule and you tell me that I have to spend it BABYSITTING? Come on mom, can’t you get BJ to do it or something?” A few more minutes passed and Nick let out a huge sigh. “Okay mom, whatever but it’s only ‘cause you promised that you’d make me pizza everyday in the next week and bring it up to my apartment. Bye mom.” Nick dropped the receiver like a hot potato.
“So, what did your mom want?” Brian asked as he picked up the receiver from its hanging position back to its cradle. “God he’s a slob.” Brian muttered under his breath.
“Frick, you’re not gonna believe this. Mom asked, no told me to baby sit her friend’s daughter while she goes on her honeymoon with her second husband. She said that I’d love to baby-sit and I do it often at home. They’re new here so they don’t know anyone else except my mom. And, oh yeah Frick, I heard that comment but I’ll forget about it since I’m so god damn pissed right now.”
“Hey Frack, look on the bright side. She might be hot.”
“No such luck. The kid’s only twelve and from what I’ve heard, she’s got a real attitude.”
“Maybe she’s been through a lot and doesn’t like her new dad?” Brian suggested hopefully.
“I dunno. Anyway, I have to pick her up at her house at nine tomorrow morning. Damn, another morning spent waking up.”
“Want me to come with you tomorrow? I’d like to keep you under my control ‘cause I know how you are in the morning. And I’m sure Jane would like her friend’s daughter to be in one piece when she returns.”
“Gee Frick, what a compliment. That just made my day.” Nick faked a dumb smile as he grabbed the remote control from Brian’s hand and started to flip through the channels.
“Excuse me Chaos, but I was watching that.” Brian glared at Nick and took the remote back.
“Whatever Frick. I’m gonna go sleep–”
“Again?” Brian interrupted him in disbelief.
“Yes again. In fact, I’m so tired now that I’ll sleep until tomorrow. Wake me up next morning.” Nick mumbled as he dragged himself up the stairs to his destination – his bed – and climbed quickly into it - immediately falling into a deep sleep.
