“You know, I think that I fully recovered about that Nick thing,” Christina announced one day while sitting in the living room and watching television.

“I’m glad,” Anna replied panting heavily because she was running on the running machine. (Author’s Note: er... ok, it sounds weird enough.)

“Anna, do you mind? The noise from the engine thing is annoying the hell out of me!” Christina cried out holding her hands to her ears to block out the noise coming from Anna’s loud footsteps and the motor of the machine.

“Sorry Chris! You know, gotta keep fit! No can do!” Anna shrugged momentarily while smiling at Christina’s ridiculous positioning.

“Whatever,” Christina groaned as she continued to try to watch television.

“Hey Chris, you’re perfect, I’m not, so, get with it.”

“No I’m n–,” Just then, the phone rang. Christina practically pounced on the receiver. She was hoping it was Devon.

“Woah! Chris! What the hell? You don’t want to break the phone!” Anna stared at her incredulously as she got off the machine to take a rest.

Christina ignored her, “Hello?”

“Um… hi Chris,” came a voice. Christina recognized it immediately. It was the same voice that has been keeping her down for the past few weeks. It was Nick. She had often wondered what she would say to him when he called. Should she act friendly and pretend as if she didn’t know anything? Or should she just slam down the receiver and not hear a single explanation from him? She had told herself that she would try to listen to him. Maybe it was someone else?

“What do you want?” Christina asked angrily as she remembered the incident at the airport, she couldn’t keep her anger down as the fire inside began to flare up, “Having fun with your million girlfriends in a place not even discovered yet?”

“Chris, I don’t under–”

“Don’t you bullshit me! I saw you that day at the airport! I don’t want anymore of this crap! You and your sweet words don’t mesmerize me! I’m not a kid you know! You should know that by now, Nickolas Gene Carter! Get out of my life!” And with that, she slammed the receiver down like a wrestler. Anna gaped at her. She had never seen Christina this angry before. She stood next to her, uncertain of what to do.

“It was Nick,” Christina told her, not looking at Anna but looking hotly at the television. She glared at the screen and it looked as if she was trying to burn it. Hatred was scribbled all over her face.

Anna didn’t know how to respond. She already knew it was Nick when she heard the anger rising in Christina’s voice when she responded to the caller on the other side. “I know,” she finally said.

“I didn’t let him say anything.”

Once again, Anna didn’t know how to reply. Was it the right time to speak? Sometimes, Anna wasn’t so sure of Christina, she seemed so insecure. Ever since the party, 8 calls out of ten would be boys and for Christina. She seemed different, but yet, she was the same person inside. Anna often felt jealous, not because of all the popularity and attention she was getting from the opposite sex, but because she didn’t seem to have anymore time for Anna. Anna felt that they were drifting apart day by day even though they were living under the same roof. Lately, Christina seemed a lot closed in and Anna had no way to reach her. She remained mute.

“Do you think I did the right thing?” Christina asked, the uneasiness in her voice slowly disappearing only to be replaced by sadness.

Anna blinked several times, she looked at Christina and realized that she was looking up at her hopefully. “Honestly Chris, no.”

Christina’s head dropped back as she brought her hands to her eyes. She moaned sadly and when she finally removed her hands from her face, she realized that Anna had seated next to her and was patting her back so gently that she could barely feel it. Anna saw that Christina had tears in her eyes, “I guess I’m not over him yet huh?” She laughed lamely in between tears.

Anna looked at her sadly and gave her a sympathetic smile, “You’ll never forget him Chris, he’s a permanent fixture in your life. Love never lasts forever. He’s the past, think of it as an experience. Now you know more about guys and relations than you had before. Right?”

“Thanks Anna. You were always my best bud. No matter through how many hard times, you’ve always been there. How do you do it? I’ve deserted you for a few weeks and you’re still here supporting me, not getting mad at me once. I really thank you for all of this… without you, I don’t think that I can be who I am today.”

“Yeah, I guess I am pretty cool huh?” Anna joked. Christina snorted. “Whatever! What did he say?”

“Well, I he just said hi and he said he didn’t understand what I was saying and, yeah, that’s basically it.” Christina said sensitively and glanced down on the chalk-ish green carpet.

“What if it wasn’t Nick?” Anna asked.

“It cannot not be Nick. It has to be him!”

“And if it wasn’t?” Anna suggested. She saw a pinkish color rising to Christina’s cheeks, “I’m just kidding Chris!” Anna burst out laughing when she saw that Christina was starting to doubt herself, “I’m sure it was Nick!”

Just then, the phone rang, giving Christina no time to respond. Noticing that Christina was not budging to pick up the phone. She stood up to get it herself. “Hiya! Who is it?”

“Oh, hi Anna. Get Chris on please.” Devon’s voice rang out clearly through the phone.

“Okay, wait a minute,” Anna covered the speaker, “It’s for you,” she told Christina, holding out the blue receiver.

Christina took the phone unwillingly and held it up to her ear, “Yeah?” She croaked.

“Chris? It’s Devon.”

“Um, yeah?” Christina replied uncomfortably, not bothering to adjust her voice so that it was in a sweeter tone.

“I was wondering if you want to go out tonight?” Devon asked without hesitation.

“Tonight? Uh… let me think about it. I’ll call you, kay?” Christina asked, getting ready to hang up.

“Yeah, kay babe. Waiting.” Devon hung up.

Christina fell back on the couch and didn’t even consider the thought of going out. She was too confused. Her mind revolved all around Nick and even the phone call with the person that she was going crazy for a few days ago hadn’t even entered her mind yet. She was waiting for Devon’s call desperately before, but now, she didn’t seem satisfied when she finally did. Going out with Devon would be a chance of a lifetime since so many girls from school would have died to go out with him.. A single call from Nick could do so much damage to her heart and mind. Has her relationship with Nick ended that easily?
