grade Computer Studies Students · The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Essay is intended for students to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by examining the difficulties he faced, the choices he made, and the outcomes of those choices. Students will use Web resources and multimedia to answer essential questions about the value of racial justice and equality. Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership by making a commitment to participate on MLK Day. The lesson begins with a thorough examination of plagiarism, how to cite sources, and how to use quotes with critical responses. Essay Format o Paragraph 1 – Frame the situation – Who was Dr. King? What difficult situations did he face? o Paragraph 2 – What alternatives or choices did Dr. King have? What alternatives or choices do people who are not being treated fairly have? What are some of the consequences or outcomes when people use non-violent ways to solve problems? Who should take responsibility for finding peaceful solutions when faced with difficult problems? o Paragraph 3 – What virtues did Dr. King display as a leader of the civil rights movement? What do you think Dr. King valued (what was his dream)? What sort of commitment will you make to get involved on MLK Day? How will you follow-through on your commitment? Assessment · Each student will be assessed on the following: o Format – Does the student follow the essay format? o Spelling and grammar o Vocabulary and facts – Does the student use information from their Web-based research and are the facts accurate? o Does the student use quotations with critical responses, and cite sources in a bibliography? o
Deadline – Does the student complete his work
on time? · Reflection – Class discussion will allow students to share what they did on MLK Day, and review essays. |
