Bailey In Car Accident

Saturday, October 27th

Donovan Bailey was involved in a car crash today when he slid on some black ice. He crawled out from the passenger side and a passerby drove him home. Police say it is unbelievable that Donovan wasn't seriously injured or killed.

Authorities have charged him with careless driving and failure to remain at the scene of the accident. His white 1996 Mercedes C36 went out of control as he was travelling south toward the Queen Elizabeth Way on Mississauga Rd. The vehicle skidded sideways, hit a concrete pole, then flipped onto its roof and caught fire.

"I'm innocent, of course. I don't know how careless can one be when you're on black ice and the car is skidding out of control on gravel," Bailey said.

The two charges Bailey faces are Highway Traffic Act offences. He is to appear in a Brampton, Ontario court on Nov. 28. The charges are not criminal counts and a conviction normally results in a fine of about $300 for each offence.

Police say there was no indication alcohol was involved or that any other vehicle was involved in the accident. Police say that had he been knocked unconscious, he likely would have been killed because the vehicle burst into flames.
