Showmanship At
Halter
also known as Fitting and
Showmanship.
Showmanship may look easy, but it requires precision and a
clear union between horse and handler. It also seperates a true showman from a
person who only "rides."
Most open shows, including 4-H, offer a class of
Showmanship. In order for an AQHA to become
sanctioned, Showmanship is required. The general rules are universal, and can
be found in the AQHA Official Rulebook. This article will outline what it is
that the judge is looking for, and the elements of a winner.
The Criteria
- Apperence of the Horse
- Apperance of the Exhibitor
- Performance in the Arena
Apperence of the Horse
- Make sure that your horse's bridlepath is the correct length. That is 1-2
inches if Hunter, 4 inces if Quarter Horse, and 12 inches for Saddle type
breeds.
- Pull the horse's mane. If the horse is Western, band it. If Hunter, Braid
it. If Saddle Type, Free Flowing.
- Clip all whiskers and long hairs around face and ears.
- Make sure that you keep the horse in good weight.
- Use a coat conditioner and detangle the mane. (If you intend to ride the
horse later, skip the area where the saddle would go.)
- Make sure that the halter/bridle fits properly (2 fingers everywhere except
throatlatch, where it is 4.)
Apperance of the Exhibitor
- Keep up with the latest fashion trends (go to shows and WATCH).
- Make sure that all clothes fit properly and are clean.
- WEAR GLOVES!!
Performance in the Arena
- Keep your horse alert.
- Show your horse (not you) from the moment that you are at the in gate to
the moment you leave the arena.
- Memorize the pattern as soon as posted. Find the common manuvers and
patterns, and practice at home.
- LEARN THE QUARTER SYSTEM (below).
- Always make sure that yo are never between the horse and the judge, and
make sure that you can always see the judge.
- When leading, stay between the horse's poll and shoulder.
- Remember to always turn your horse AWAY from you.
The Quarter System
Using figure A, When the judge is in quadrant I, the handler should be in
IV.
Judge in II, handler in I
