The Scandinavian Collectors Club, Chapter 24, meets the second and fourth
Wednesdays of each month, September to May, at the Scandinavian Centre here
Winnipeg. Address is 764 Erin Street and meetings open shortly after 7:00pm.
Any collector of Scandinavian countries welcome.
Glenn holds open house at his summer cottage for Chapter 24 members, and
any members of the international body, as long as he is given some advance
notice. The cottage is at Lac Lu, Ontario and is situated nine kilometres
off the Trans-Canada (Ontario Highway 17)on highway 641, off the Kenora
exit (West of Kenora).
Chapter 24 also holds an annual Christmas Party in December with Aase.
Roger Fontaine's wife, preparing all sorts of good Danish delicacies.
This is always a highlight of our year.
The Winnipeg Philatelic Society meets the first and third
Thursdays of each month, September to June with a single meeting in December
and June. We meet in Room 309, Union Centre Building, corner of
Broadway & Smith. Meetings usually begin shortly after 6pm each
meeting night with a short business meeting at 8:00pm followed by either a
members' auction or program.
The club's annual bourse and exhibition will be held May 1, 2, and 3 this coming
year and will be held at the Ramada Marlborough on Smith Street right in
the heart of downtown Winnipeg.
In the year 2000 WPS will be celebrating its 100th birthday and RPSC (the
Royal Philatelic Society of Canada) will be holding their annual convention
and exhibition here. SCC International will be holding its first ever
annual meeting outside the United States with us at our anniversary show.
This too will be held at the Ramada Marlborough which has just completed
a multi-million dollar renovation program. Because of the expected size
of this show we will be using the renowned Skyview Ballroom with its
abundance of natural lighting as well as plenty of assisting artificial
lighting
WPS has been working with junior collectors in the schools for a
number of years and has finally been able to have a church give us space
for a junior stamp club meeting on Sunday afternoons. The Winnipeg Junior
Stamp Club has met this fall at All Saints Church, corner of Broadway and
Osborne, four times to date, meeting twice a month. Attendance is growing
and we are bursting at the seams.
BNAPS (British North America Philatelic Society) another international
stamp society, has a local study group that meets about four times a year
at St, Peters Anglican Church in Winnipeg.
Creative Retirement's Senior Stamp Club meets at 185 Smith Street Tuesday
afternoons. Usually the first and Third, at 1:30.
Each of these areas will have their own section in this home page with
news and views and, I hope, occasionally submitted articles and stories.
In the pages below I have included several links. You can gain access to
these links simply by clicking on the highlights displayed as part of the
text. Some of these links are very extensive. Joe Luft's site, for instance,
had over 850 additional links to explore the last time I checked the
number. Toke Norby's site, highlighted in the Scandinavian Collectors Club
page is almost as extensive.
Don't get lost in all this. Be sure to come back and always press RELOAD
as my site (and many others) is constantly being up-dated.
You can also access my links through the listing at the end of this home
page

The Scandinavian Collectors
Club Page
Updated January 31st, 1998

Can you identify the Nordic Countries represented by these flags?
They are:--Aland, Denmark, Faroe, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and
Sweden...but not in that order. Make out a list with numbers 1 to 8 and
see if you can place all flags with their country. Later on in this page I
will give your their identity.
At one time I was intending to post a long list of "favourite" sites but
this is sort of self defeating as there are a number of really useful web
sites I can give you here that will lead you wherever you want to go in
either general philately or in Nordic countries specifically.
In general philately there is no better site than Joe Luft.
In Nordic countries philately there is no better site than Toke Norby, in
Denmark. His site is in English.
Members of SCC International have access to a Sales Mart of Circuit Books of other members.
There is also a large lending library, The Posthorn (a 48 page quarterly
journal of articles on the Nordic countries), an annual meeting held in
various parts of the US, and contact with club members from all over the
world through The Posthorn and the internet. Dues are $15US or $21Canadian
with a small one time administration fee.
For more information on SCC, the international organization, and its quarterly journal,
go to Sandra Downs site.
Membership Applications can be obtained from:--
Don Brent,
Executive Secretary, SCC,
P.O. Box 13196,
El Cajon,CA,92020, USA
E-mail address: dbrent47@sprynet.com
or from:(for Canada)--
Glenn Hansen
Canadian Membership Director,
113 - 211 Watson Street,
Winnipeg, MB, R2P 2E1,
E-mail address: fredrik@escape.ca.
or
Roger Fontaine,
177 Crestview Drive,
Winnipeg, MB., R2J 1H9
Chapter 24 of SCC is here in Winnipeg and over half our members are also
members of the international SCC. Roger Fontaine is currently the Canadian
Sales Circuit Manager and all Canadian SCC members are encouraged to write
him for information on our independant circuit system
This was needed to avoid the recurring problems of importing the Sales
Circuit mailings from the US.
Roger is busy retiring some of last season's circuit books and
readying a new batch for distribution right now. He is anxious to add to
his stock so if you have some blank books fill them up and send them
along. Remember each book should have a sales value of at least $35.00
but price your material fairly. Most items will not sell well at much
over a quarter to a half-catalog although there are some exceptions to this.
Use, if possible, the specialized catalogue of your country(ies)as these
are easy to follow even if written in one of the Norse countries language.
It is easy to convert currency into Canadian funds as most newspapers have
daily reports on currency values. Facit is good for all Scandinavia and
has English translations of the original Swedish text. However, the AFA
series is good, particularly for Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Faroes, and
Iceland.
Roger has extra circuit books available at 75 Cents. Pick up some extra
sales books from Roger and get at it. Once again, Remember: his address is:--
Roger Fontaine,
177 Crestwood Cresc.,
Winnipeg, MB, R2J 1H9
If you are on the internet you can send him a message through my e-mail.
I will relay your message on to him. (anything is faster than snail mail
and the internet is cheaper than the telephone)
If you are receiving the circuits always remember to return them promptly
so that others can see them.
Sales last season were up $1000.00 from the previous year, with a constant
supply of new circuit books we hope to improve on that.
In order to serve our readers better we (Roger and I) would like to know
a bit about you. We already have a number of member-profiles sent in with
memberships this past year but if you did not send yours in last year or
are a new member just drop us a note listing your interests.
My own are Denmark, mostly modern, used. I specialize in Denmark's Ferry
Post Stamps and have done some exhibiting. I have earned several awards
over the years including a GOLD here in Canada and a SILVER at Rompex'96.I
now have enough for 8 to 9 16-page frames and will exhibit in Chicago this
November.
Roger also collects Denmark and his specialty is the bi-colours. He hasn't
exhibited yet but certainly has the material for it.
Knud Markmann, another SCC member in Local 24, has exhibited extensively.
His specialties are Denmark, Semi-Postals, Perfins, Christmas Seals, and Bornholm. He has
exhibited his Bornholm and has won several awards for it including BRONZE,
SILVER, and locally, BEST IN SHOW. I think Knud can be persuaded to exhibit
in Chicago as well.
Another exhibiting member of our local and SCC is Ole Hellsten, who seems
determined to collect almost anything and everything but is strong in
Canada and Denmark. His exhibit of the Christian X, 5 and 10 Ore won a
SILVER in Chicago in 1993.
All this talk about exhibiting reminds me of AAPE, the American Association
of Philatelic Exhibitors. A membership costs $18US and I joined at Rompex'96.
I was so impressed with The Philatelic Exhibitor, their quarterly journal,
that I bought all their back issues that were available.
Talk about a gold mine of information!
I now have a complete set of the The Philatelic Exhibitor and I'm going to get
them bound and will have them available for members of SCC (Canada) and of
the Winnipeg Philatelic Society. There were three issues that were very
difficult to obtain but one very generous member of AAPE filled the set in
for me just this past month.
You can join.
Write to:--
Dr. Russell V. Skavaril,
222 East Torrence Road,
Columbus, OH,

or
FAX:(614)261 6628
Are you a writer? Want to see your epic on the internet? Send it on to me
and as long as it is about your Nordic countries hobby I will publish it
here on this page.
We will be mailing out copies of this section of Manitoba Stamps to all
Canadian members on our mailing list so if you are not a member now is the
time. Canadian dues are $21.00 a year and there is a one-time admission fee
of $2.00.
Some of you have noted that the Posthorn has been late quite a bit over the
last few year. It is now on track thanks to the new editor, Sandra Downs.
Sandra is already well-known to those of
you who browse the internet. Joe Frye is helping her as an interim editor
but has been ill so Sandra is de facto, the Editor.
Some of our members are taking advantage of Doc Melberg and his SCC Library
down in Michigan. A number of our Winnipeg SCC members have offered to
loan out their material and we are planning to prepare a list of what we
have available later this year. The cost to you would be the postage both
ways and there is nothing better for increasing your knowledge than access
to reference material. If you have tried the international library and Doc
doesn't have what you want give us a try.
For more information on the activities of Chapter 24 go up to the introduction
section immediately above.
About those Flags!
Starting from the left side. The flags are for:--Norway, Iceland, Sweden,
Finland, Denmark, Greenland, Aland, and Faroe.

The Winnipeg Philatelic Society Page
The Winnipeg Junior Stamp Club Page
The BNAPS Local Study Group Page
The Winnipeg Philatelic Society, founded in 1900, is the umbrella
organization for The Winnipeg Junior Stamp Club and The BNAPS Local Study
Group. WPS is Chapter 86 of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC)
and Chapter 813 of The American Philatelic Society (APS). The APS has a
website at APS
WPS publishes a club journal, The Buffalo, which appears ten times a year.
The Buffalo is available on subscription for $10 a year. Membership are
due July 1st of each year and are $20 for regular members, $15.00 for
spouses, seniors, and juniors with a $2 one-time-only admission fee.
Meetings are held the first and third Thursdays of each month, September to
November, January to May, each season with one meeting, usually the first
Thursday, December and June. These two meetings are social affairs; one is
a Christmas social with a Charity Auction, the other is a social affair,
a season wind-up.
All meetings are held in Room 309, Union Centre, at
the corner of Broadway & Smith. This is a very central location, easily
accessible from all downtown hotels. Meetings open shortly after six with
socializing, circuit book viewing, swapping and trading. The formal
meeting opens at eight and is usually very short. The first meeting of
the month is a members' auction. The second meeting has a program which
varies between guest speakers, slides shows, and presentations on such
topics as exhibiting, computer utilization, and whatever the members may
seem to want.
The club's Christmas Party was held at the Union Centre December 4th.
This included a Charity Auction with the funds going
to the Salvation Army. The auction items are anything at all, not always
philatelic but including dainties (home baked) which often fetch good prices
The Winnipeg Junior Stamp Club has begun operation in September of this
year and is the off-shoot of the very successful Youth Table operations
of the senior body. This, in turn, has grown from the initial efforts of
Mr. Stuart A, Clark who ran it almost single-handedly for years. Now it
has grown under Ole Hellsten and a really great group of volunteers.
For years Stuart Clark went all around the city collecting stamps each year
so that he could run his Youth Table at the annual Stamp Show of WPS.
Now contributions have soared and so has the demands of young collectors
both at the annual show and in school stamp clubs scattered throughout the
city and out into the Province of Manitoba.
A few years ago Ted Mayo opened up a Saturday Junior Stamp Club in a library
in Fort Rouge and this may be said to be the fore-runner of the new club.
Ted has asked to step down from his pioneering effort and Ole Hellsten
has been successful in expanding the program through the co-operation of
All Saints Anglican Church in central Winnipeg.
The young collectors we are reaching out to now will be the adult collectors
of the future. We do not know what the future of stamp issues will be as
the computer and the internet reduce the use of what we all cynically call
"Snail Mail" and the telephone except for local service.
We do know, however, that man is a collector and a scavenger and as long
as that instinct can be nurtured there will be stamp collectors...even if
there is no longer any need for stamp issuing countries, or stamps.
In future, as we move back into the stamp collecting season (or at least the
time when stamp collectors like to hive together and socialize and so on)
news of the activities of Winnipeg stamp collectors will be highlighted here.
The group held its first meeting on September 28th at the church and it was
a real success. Over 30 kids and a number of parents attended and seemed to
thoroughly enjoy themselves. What was impressive was the interest of the
parents in the club. They came to help their own children and became active
in helping us make the club work. The interest of the church in the project
was extremely encouraging.
It is quite evident that All Saints is operating
an outreach program to help people in the parish improve their conditions by
giving the children something to do other than become street kids. Some of
these children are definitely showing up and both Reverend John Holman and
Neil Holroyd are not only pleased but extremely helpful
Meetings are continuing on the second and fourth Sundays (one meeting only in
December)with the club splitting into two sections. One for children who are
already stamp collectors and another for beginners.
The "senior" group is made up of children who, basically, have come from Ted
Mayo's club and these will likely graduate into members of WPS as time goes
on.

The Creative Retirement Stamp Club Page
The Creative Retirment Stamp Club meets at 185 Smith Street here in Winnipeg
on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, October to May inclusive.
For the months of June, July, August, and September the club meets on the
third Tuesday of the month only.
Meetings are held in lecture room No. 2 which is on the second floor from
about 1pm to around 4pm.
The program for each meeting commences with a few minutes covering the latest
stamp news and gossip followed by an update on the club's activities. This
is followed by a coffee/tea break. After the break the club has a session
of dealing with a specific topic of interest or a guest speaker.
Trading, buying, and selling can take place before the formal meeting starts,
after the break, or continue till closing time if there is no speaker or
formal program.
Club membership is open to anyone over 55 and visitors are always welcome.

The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada Page
RPSC has its own home page at
RPSC
Look it up if you are interested in joining a national stamp club with an
international reputation as being well worth the price of admission. Full
details on many facets of RPSC can be found at this site.
RPSC is the national stamp club of Canada. It holds a combined convention,
exhibition, and annual meeting each year. This event is almost always held
in Canada with sites chosen from submitted applications submitted by the
RPSC chapters from coast to coast.
Winnipeg's WPS is Chapter 86 and will be hosting RPSC in the year 2000. The
event will be held in the Ramada Marlborough Hotel which is located
centrally in downtown Winnipeg.
RPSC publishes The Canadian Philatelist six times a year. this is a 156
page journal with many regular features and a number of well written
articles by well known Canadian collectors.
The society also publishes a list of accredited judges, National, Regional,
Apprentice, National Emeritus, and Regional Emeritus.
By the way, if you want a list of philatelic societies all over the world a good site
is philatelic.comphilatelic.

The British North America Philatelic Society
The British North America Philatelic Society is dedicated to the stamps of
Canada including all the provinces and their stamps.
It publishes its journal bi-monthly of articles dealing with all facets
of Canadian philatelic happenings and history along with a quarterly of
current society personalities and happenings.
BNAPS holds annual meetings, alternating between sites in Canada and the
United States, indicating its membership composition of mainly Americans
and Canadians.
It maintains its own extreme well done web page, a site interesting enough
to visit just to see how it is done. Click on BNAPS

My Short Links Resume Page
In the body of my text I have included a few links and I am repeating them
below for those who like to go to a Links section all by itself. This may
be handy in future as I add to the links list.
The list will remain short, however, as the ones I choose are "Links
Goldmines" all by themselves.
