No-Load Funds
What is a no-load fund?
A no-load fund is one that does not have a sales charge to the investor to buy or to sell. Most mutual funds charge between 2% to 6% to buy and this translates into an immediate loss to the investor. It means that on a $10,000 investment with a 5% charge, for example, the investment would be worth only $9,500 immediately.
There are, however, many very good funds that do not charge any fee to buy or sell. If any of the following fund companies are on the school district's list of investment options, a teacher would be advised to set up the 403(b) with one of them. It is suggested that the teacher choose an Index Fund if the company offers one. Some of these companies have both load and no-load funds but all have at least some no-load funds. Teachers may call them at their toll-free number to request an application to open a 403(b) account.
