Into The Labyrinth - 1993 -     Performed by Lisa Gerrard & Brendan Perry Engineered and Produced by Brendan Perry at Quivvy Church. sign by Chris Bigg & Brendan Perry."The Wind that Shakes the Barley" is dedicated to the memory of Maureen Copper.

Originally titled 'Solomon-Song', this poem, actually a song, is taken from a German collection of Bertolt Brecht's writings, author of the Three Penny Opera. Brecht actually includes this song, in an earlier version, in the Three Penny Opera with music by Kurt Weill. Brendan has left out one stanza of this song, perhaps in order to cut down on the total time of the song. The extra stanza concerns Martin Luther, the founder of the Luthern Church movement. Otherwise the song is a fairly on target translation

Lonely is an Eyesore  1984         Dead Can Dance
This is a music/video compilation of musicians on the 4AD label. Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) contributed the following two tracks:

  • Frontier
Produced by L. Gerrard/B. Perry Recorded on 4 track in Belgrave, Melbourne, 1979, Engineered by Ron Stecher, Mixed at Blackwing, London, Nov '86, Egineered by Jonathan Dee
Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, the two main protagonists, live high up in a high rise. God only knows whether it's getting them closer to heaven...their music tries. It ignores fashion, reaches out for historical touchstones (the choral, the classical, the symphonic), searches for some nebulous, non-aligned spirituality. Add to the fact that some of their work would hardly be misplaced accompanying a mysterious, undefined cinematic quest like Antonioni's The Passenger, and Dead Can Dance begin to seem almost ridiculously ambitious.
But they prefer to impose stringent austerity measures on their art rather than succumb to grand conceit. They pursue the big questions with a discipline of thought and attention to detail in composition, and the result is usualy something statuesque and solid enough to withstand the ravages of time. This is a music built to last.
`Frontier' (on this record in its original demo form) was recorded in one take because the essential juices were leaking so fast from the water-filled oil drume Perry was battering. Somehow, such necessary spontineity gave way to their taking a year to conceive and record their second album 'Spleen and Ideal'. That the visceral effcts of their music have remained the same is either a testament to immense luck, or great ability. No-one should have much trouble deciding which.

The original Spanish version of Fortune Presents Gifts Not According to the Book is from the poem 'Letrillas' 1581) by the priest Luis de Gongora. The interesting thing about this piece is that Dead Can Dance changed "a hundred crimes" into "a thousand crimes" in their version.

Baraka is an ancient Sufi word with forms in many languages. It is simply translated as a blessing, or the breath or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds. Baraka, the epic non-verbal film, tells the story of the Earth's evolution, man's diversity and interconnection, and his impact on the planet. According to director Ron Fricke, "It is a journey of rediscovery that plunges into nature, history, the human spirit, and fimally into the realm of the infinite." The film was shot in 70mm in 24 countries, in diverse locales such as Brazil, Nepal, Cambodia, Kuwait, India, Tanzania, and Iran.
