A Few Words On Ocean Pollution

A Web Page Created For Our Com 204 Course At Cal Poly Pomona.

What is NPS Pollution?

NPS, which stands for Nonpoint Source Pollution, is the pollution of coastal waters which occurs most frequently when water, from rain or human sources, such as watering a lawn or washing a car, runs over land, or through the ground, and picks up pollutants, such as sediment, nutrients, pathogens, and toxic chemicals, depositing them into the ocean via the stormwater system. Basically the term nonpoint indicates how the exact source of pollution is unknown in contrast to point pollution in which the source can be easily detected.

What We Did

When arguing against NPS pollution our group used three major points.

  1. That NPS carries with it many public health and safety risks.
  2. That one of the main reasons NPS pollution is such a problem is because people are not as educated as the EPA thinks.
  3. That the EPA's methods for fighting this problem are not working, and that they need new ones.
