(4/8/99)Great news today from the spring drills. One of OSU's most (arguably) talented defensive linemen has finally gained academic eligibility, that being Paris Long. Players on the team have felt that he is one of the most talented players in camp and if eligible could have started last year. Another nice surprise has been Donnie Nickey, who has really impressed the coaches and is now considered a strong contestant along with Percy King for the SS spot. Some other position battles included Nate Clements and Derek Ross for CB, Tim Cheatwood and Courtland Bullard for OLB, and Chris Kirk and Jason Ott for MLB. That's the good news, now for some not so good news from spring drills. Long has strained his groin and will be out 3-5 days. Austin Moherman came to practice with an icebag over his throwing elbow, though he said it wasn't too serious and he should be back soon. OL Mike Gurr injured his knee, but an MRI revealed no serious damage and he should be back later in the spring practice. C Drew Elford has broken a bone in is back, and it is potentially a career threatening injury. I wish him the best of luck and hope he recovers soon.

(3/30/99)Due to academic problems yet again, Rob Murphy has been suspended by John Cooper for the 15 spring practices just getting underway. Cooper said he wants to be sure to avoid a repeat of what happened last year.

(3/12/99)As you guys probably saw yesterday Ohio St. defeated Murray St. to advance to the second round of the NCAA's. Their next opponent is Detroit Mercy, who pulled out a huge upset over UCLA. The game is Saturday.

(3/8/99)If you care about college basketball you probably already know that OSU is the 4th seed in the South and will face Murray St. in the first round. If the Buckeyes win that one then they will most likely play UCLA, and if they can continue winning then Auburn would be the favorite for them to play, though I wouldn't quite engrave that happening yet. I think it would be great if we could make it at least to the Sweet 16, especially condsidering where we were at last year. If Redd and Penn stay then this sure will be an exciting team to watch next year. I believe the game is on Friday so I'll let you know what happens.

(3/7/99)As you probably know the basketball team lost to Illinois yesterday and are out of the Big 10 tourney. Unfortunately I missed the game, but a friend of mine that watched the game said the Buckeyes appeared tired. I guess the silver lining in this is that the team will have more time to rest up for the NCAA's, particularly Scoonie Penn who is still recovering from his injury. It'll be MSU and ILL in the conference championship. Ironically MSU is one of the best teams in the NCAA and ILL is considering one of the worst in the conference, but they could still pull out an upset. It's just been that kind of a year in the Big 10, it's got so many talented teams this year. Anyways look for some more stuff soon on the NCAA's and maybe some football news(if there is any).

(3/5/99)Congratulations to the basketball team for their vicory over Michigan earlier today. The Buckeyes won 87-69, and Michael Redd led in scoring at 19 points. Scoonie Penn played despite his injury, and though he was not 100% it has to be a good sign to have him on the court. I believe they are scheduled to face Illinois tomorrow in the semi-finals.

(2/28/99)The Dispatch is reporting that John Cooper and the AD Geiger are working on an extension that would pay John a million per year. As far as length it supposedly should take Cooper to his retirement. Also the basketball Buckeyes have dropped to #12 following their loss to Penn State.

(2/27/99)The Buckeye B-Ball team lost today against PSU, ending their winning streak at seven. The Buckeyes however were already guaranteed a #2 ranking the Big 10 and a #2 seed in the Big 10 tourney, so it's still been a fantastic year for them. The only real concern on the game is that Scoonie Penn was injured in the game. He did return but seemed like the injury still bothered him. Hopefully not serious.

(2/24/99)The Buckeyes have just beaten Wisconsin by nine points tonight. They have one more regular season game left (Penn St.) and then comes the Big 10 Tourney and then the NCAA Tourney. Would be great to see them make a strong run in both.

(2/22/99)Well the Buckeyes have also reached number ten in the AP poll. Quite a year for Buckeye basketball. Who would think we'd be ranked higher than traditional powers such as Kentucky and Kansas? Hope we can win the Big 10 tourney (though MSU will be tough to beat) and make a strong showing in the NCAA tournament. More tomorrow.

(2/21/99)Good news for hoops fans today. The Buckeye hoopsters have cracked the top 10 in the ESPN/USA today coaches poll! I can't remember the last time that happened (though admittedly I haven't been following the B-Ball team for that long). The AP poll will be out tomorrow, and I'll be back with the results as soon as I see them.

(2/16/99)Well it appears that the careers of two OSU football players have come to an end. Sean Penny's neck injury will force him to stop playing, and it's pretty much all but official now. The other player is Charlie Sanders, who has decided to quit the team. He is apparently still enrolled at OSU though. More later...

(2/15/99)- The Buckeye hoopsters continue to progress in the polls. They are number eleven(not one like I accidently said before...though that would be good too) in both the AP and USA Today polls. It looks like the first time in quite a while we could crack the top 10. That would be great. Anyways, back to football...

According to a post at the O-Zone Derek Ross is apparently going to get a shot at WR this year in spring practice. He has also gained 16 pounds since last year (mostly muscle though), and several other Buckeyes have put on some muscle in the offseason as well. One guy I'm really excited about is Jonathon Wells. You probably already know about the talent he has, and during the offseason he has lost some of his babyfat and replaced it with muscle. He is now around 232, though he wants to get back around the 225 he played at last year. He also recently ran a 4.5 in the 40. He seems poised for a big year in relief of Mike Wiley. See you tomorrow.

(2/14/99)- Well...just made this page so I wanted to have someting to put in here, so I'm going to talk about the Bryce Bishop-settlement, even though it happened a couple days ago. As most of you by now know Bill Conley had an illegal visit with Bishop during an NCAA mandated "quiet" period. Coach Simms also had a similar visit with Roshard Gilyard (whom we did not sign). OSU has since recommended (and the NCAA has verbally accepted) that the punishment be to prevent Conley and Simms from making off-campus visits until after next year's signing day. A rather stiff penalty I think, especially since Conley is our best recruiter and this is considered a minor violation. It does however send a strong message about OSU's willingness to comply with the rules so perhaps in the long run it will be for the best.
