THE HUMBOLDT SQUID, Dosdicus gigas
The Bahia de los Angeles,Gulf of California Squid photos illustrate that the squids swim to shallow water to die. The sea gulls however think of a meal and sever the dorsal nerve cord between the head and top of the mantle. Then the sea gulls take the eyes and then the rest of the squid. There were seven of the squid at one time that were "stranded". Cleaned them out to feed to the sea turtles at Bahia de los Angeles. In the process of cleaning the squids insides. What they had eaten and perhaps the reason they beached themselves was that my arm was stinging from nematocysts. From what creature have no idea. Perhaps it could be a reason the squid that washed ashore at La Jolla, they ate something that was in "bloom" and had nematocysts and became neurologically challenged. By the tons they washed upon the beach at The Cove and Childrens Pool in La Jolla. Thought you might like to see some of these squid photographs! Wes Farmer

On the 26th of January decided to go fishing on the Dolphin II to make photographs of the Humboldt Squid being caught. Here is one that was caught on a squid lure. The lure glows green so the squid can see it in the dark. To catch Humboldt Squid in these waters off San Diego in January seems to have a connection to global warming.
The Memorial Day weekend prompted a trip to Bahia de los Angeles, Baja. During our stay there were in two days 8 Humboldt Squid observed. The seagulls were feeding on some and some were in the intertidal where they could be photographed.
