RESOURCES FOR JICKLING RESEARCH

JICKLES AND JIKLING, by Sue Hobbs (15)

I recently stumbled upon two interesting surnames: JICKLES and JIKLING. Jickles is a surname being researched by one of the newest additions to our mailing list, Nancy Gannon. Her Jickles are from Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. Maude Isabelle Jickles, born 20 May 1878 in Hallowell, ON married Manley Stephen DENARD. Maude's sister, Matilda Jickles, is shown in 1910 New York census, living with husband John O. Elliott in Batavia. That same census record shows two nephews, William Jickles (b. ca. 1875) and George Jickles (b. ca. 1890) living with them. Maude died 28 Dec 1960 at Bloomfield, ON and is buried at Cherry Valley Cemetery in Prince Edward County. Maude Isabelle Jickles' father's name is unknown, but her mother was Hester Turner of Canada.

Nancy believes the Jickles were English. I wonder whether the Jickles and the Jicklings were actually the same family. Perhaps someone reading this will have some ideas. Meanwhile, Nancy has written to the two children of Maude who are still living, and she'll share what she learns with us.

My other discovery was mention of one Eli JIKLING of Norway. She married Robert NEERGAARD. They both died in Norway and their descendants settled in Chicago, Illinois. In the October 1998 issue of the Jickling Journal, I reported that Dr. Bob Jickling (4) had spotted GIKLINGS in the Oslo phone directory. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable of world history than I can suggest likely times and places for Norwegian Jiklings and Giklings and such to have arrived in England.

ANGEL ALIGHTS AND BLESSES JICKLING JOURNAL, by Sue Hobbs (15)

It's true. An angel, cleverly disguised as a Jickling Journal subscriber, has delivered a generous donation into the hands of your delighted editor. This donation will cover the postage and photocopying expenses of the Jickling Journal for 1999! Thank you, angel!

EDITOR'S NOTE

ANYONE WISHING TO WRITE ARTICLES for the Jickling Journal is enthusiastically encouraged to do so!

NEW LOOK -- All of the feedback about the new rendition of the Jickling Journal has been positive. I trust the new format is more pleasing to the eyes of our "snail mail" recipients in particular. (Email users become used to unformatted documents, but formatting is prettier and it's more fun for the editor.)

GALLERY UPDATE -- Last month I listed ideas for names for our gallery and asked for your votes. The winner is... JICKLING FAMILY ALBUM. Now all I need is web space. Stay tuned.

HOW TO SEND PHOTOS -- There are several ways to send photos and documents for the gallery and/or newsletter. Laser copies work well; I can scan them fairly successfully. If you have access to a scanner, you are welcome to send scanned images to me via email or on a disk by snail mail. I can work with any format, but I'm developing a preference for *.bmp. If you do scan the images, I suggest scanning one item per image file, at 100% of original size, and save black-and-white or sepia images as grayscale. Optimal scans come from originals, but it is risky business to ship originals off for scanning. If you don't have access to free or cheap scanning I recommend laser copies. Images that seem a great deal lighter or darker than others should be copied separately. Tintypes and daguerreotypes tend to turn out much darker than photos printed on paper, so please allow for that. (Of course, I didn't know all of this a month ago. I'm learning a lot!)

CORRESPONDENCE

Doug Jickling (3) has a new email address: dwj@canadawired.com.

Nancy Cooper (4) has a new email address: ncooper2@aol.com.

Meg and Tom Herman (5) report problems with their email are resolved and confirm that the correct address is tpherman@tds.net.

Jean Jickling (3) reports that Rhoda Mary (Jickling) Makaroff, listed among the birthday people last month, passed away 7 May 1992, in Guerneville, CA.

Marlene Bailey (4) reports the following updates: Stanley Reginald Hutton died 2 Nov 1995. Allan Raymond Hutton died 2 Apr 1997. Margaret (Peggy) Cash Hutton died 27 Nov 1996. Verda Cooper Kingdon died 17 Sep 1994. Gladys Cooper Taylor died 16 Mar 1993. Lawrence Taylor died 11 Aug 1987. (All are buried in St. Marys Cemetery in Ontario.) Gordon Russell (Russ) Cooper was born in 1921 and died 11 Nov 1993. (His cremains are believed to be in Las Vegas with his children, Bill and Leslie. Wife Eleanor lives near Barrie, ON.)

Mary B. Luke (9) sends the following, in response to my request for information about Alice P. or Mary Alice P. Jickling: "My father was Glenn D. Jickling and his father was George B. Jickling. George B. had a sister, Alice Jickling, born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The family moved to Jasper County, Iowa (near Colfax) when the children were young. They later moved to Peru, Iowa and Winterset, Iowa where Glenn married Mary Helen Weeks. They raised two children and farmed. Alice Jickling came to my parents house one time. She was tall and a very nice lady. She had a younger fellow driving a small type car with her. We never heard from her after that. My father did not care for him!! He later called and said Alice had died in California. My father was very suspicious of all this. However, he was getting quite old at that time." [Alas, Mary's story only presents another mystery, because I believe I have solved the Mary Alice P. Jickling one. See Who's That?, below, for details. - Ed.]

Eric Bowers (1) sends this piece of lore from the ultimate Jickling home town of King's Lynn, Norfolk, England: "Today has seen the first of our winter snow. Not much, mind, but enough to remind us that our first fun fair is on its way. We call this fair the Mart, granted a charter for King's Lynn by King John several hundred years ago to open on the 14th Feb. every year. The advent of the Mart always presages bad weather as any true inhabitant of King's Lynn will always inform newcomers to the town. Just a little bit of local history for you."

Jean Jickling (3) send these updates: Lawrence Jickling born in 1901 died December 8,1982. Lawrence's wife is 92 coming 93 and up to now has been able to live on her own. Perhaps she is the oldest female Jickling.

Correction: The e-mail address, bobj@aracnet.net, is for Bob Jickling (Robert Stanley Jickling) of Mississauga, ON, not his son Rob, as previously indicated.

WHO'S THAT?
Can you identify these Jicklings?

Solved!:

Mary Alice P. Jickling, whom I had found in the Social Security Death Index and the California Death Index, defied identification until I requested a copy of her original application for her Social Security number. From it I learned that she was born Mary Alice Payne, daughter of Robert L. and Queen (Ferguarson) Payne, in Bedford, Virginia on 6 Jan 1889. At the time of her application, she resided in Elmira, CA and was employed by Basic Vegetable Products Company in Vacaville, CA. All of this was interesting, but it didn't tell me who her husband was. Fortunately, I remembered that there had been a Jickling who lived in California and had died in Oregon on a trip to visit family in Canada. Indeed, my records showed that Robert William Jickling (13), eldest child of Joseph Benjamin and Mary Ellen (Burton) Jickling had lived in Elmira, CA and had died in Oregon during a trip to Canada. My records also showed that he had two adopted daughters, but I had no information about his wife. It seems reasonable to assume that Mary Alice Payne was the wife of Robert William Jickling, although I'll be seeking confirmation of that. It therefore seems reasonable to assume that those two adopted daughters grew up and married and had children, so I'll be looking for them too.

Past:

Stuart Hutton's collection also includes the following image, which I think might be Mary too.

Strengthening my belief that these pictures are of Mary is information from the 1871 and 1881 census records of East Zorra, Ontario which show Mary as head of household and enumerated with her each time is a young boy. In 1871, it is James Jickling, age 11, born in England. In 1881, it is Thomas A. Jickling, age 10, born in Ontario. I think it likely that the above photo that includes the boy is of Mary and either James or Thomas. Thomas was certainly her grandson, Thomas Anthony, but I don't know how James was related, and the census record either doesn't say or I neglected to note the information. Ideas, anyone?

Present:

In Michigan: Frances Jickling, Robyn Denise Jickling, Thomas K. Jickling & Elizabeth K. Jickling-Preville.
In Alberta: R.E. (Bob) Jickling, Mark Jickling (in Edmonton), W. Jickling (in Edmonton), F.V. Jickling (in Brooks).
In Manitoba: Robert Jickling of Lorette.
In Saskatchewan: Patti Jickling of Saskatchewan Securities Commission
Robin Jickling Leskiw, location unknown.
