This crocheted case is similar to a very small purse and is attractive and functional. When you've finished crocheting the case you can decorate it according to your own personal style. This case may also be used to protect your reading or prescription glasses. Sometimes the cost is so high for prescription glasses with new frames and lenses, it seems like you almost have to take out personal or military loans just to pay for them.
CIGARETTE CASE
Size: Approximately 5” tall and 3” across. 1 ½” thick.
Materials: Omega Hilos #18 Crochet Nylon. Black Plastic Canvas. Black Yarn. Tapestry Needle. Size “D” crochet hook. Velcro strips. Clear sewing thread. Sewing needle.
To make inner form: Cut plastic canvas into the following size pieces – 2 pc 7 x 26 squares, 2 pc 18 x 26 squares, 1 pc 7 x 18 squares. Using black yarn and tapestry needle, sew pieces together to form an open topped box. This will fit easily inside the nylon case to help keep it’s shape. It’s also a good guide to use as you are crocheting to match the gauge.
Case:
Foundation base:
Row 1: Chain 16, hdc in second ch from hook and across to end. (15 hdc).
Row 2-5: Chain 1, turn. Hdc in each stitch across. (15 hdc).
Case: (Begin working in rounds). **Do not turn unless otherwise instructed.
Round 1: Chain 1. 1 sc, 2dc in first stitch on side (this set of 3 stitches will be referred to as a group). Crochet 2 more groups evenly across side edge. Crochet 5 groups evenly across long edge. (You may need to skip 2 or 3 stitches to do this). Crochet 3 groups across next side edge. Crochet 5 groups evenly across long edge. Join with slip stitch to first sc. (16 groups)
Rnd 2: Slip stitch in next dc. Chain 1, hdc in same stitch. Hdc in next dc and in each DC around, skipping the sc’s. You will have 32 hdc’s at the end of this round. Slip stitch to beginning hdc.
Note: I like for the groups to appear to be even above each other in the alternate rows. In order to do this you may need to slip stitch into the 2nd hdc above the previous group row to start your new group row. If not, you will end up with your groups slightly off center for each alternate round. It makes a nice pattern repetition if you don’t want the groups to be evenly aligned.
Rnd 3: Slip stitch into next hdc. (Chain 1, sc, 2 dc in same stitch. Skip next hdc. Crochet group in next hdc.) Repeat ( ) around to beginning group. Slip stitch in beginning sc. (16 groups).
Rnd 4: Repeat Round 2.
Rnd 5: Repeat Round 3.
Repeat Rounds 4 and 5 until desired length of case is achieved.
Flap:
Row 1: Slip stitch in each stitch to back of case. Chain 1. (Sc, 2dc in same stitch, skip next stitch). Repeat 5 times. Sc in next stitch. Turn. (6 groups).
Row 2: Chain 1, hdc in same stitch and in each hdc across. (13 hdc)
Row 3: Chain 1. Sc, 2 dc in same stitch. (Skip next stitch. Sc, 2 dc in next stitch.) Repeat to end. Sc in end stitch. Turn.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 to achieve desired length of flap.
Finishing:
Do not turn after last row (group row). Hdc evenly along edge of flap to case edge. Hdc in each stitch around to second flap edge. Hdc evenly along edge to end. Finish off.
Decorating:
Now comes the fun part! Push the plastic canvas insert into the case and manipulate it until it fits firmly inside.
Trim two pieces of Velcro (the loop and smooth sides) to about 1 ½” to 2”. Place piece on inside of flap and sew firmly. Sew other Velcro piece onto the outside of the case, lining up where the loop Velcro piece should meet it.
I used a decorative brooch pin that I found at JoAnn to put on the flap cover of my case. You may use a button or whatever embellishment that you prefer. Just keep in mind, whatever you use, make sure there are open spaces around the edges, so that you can sew it firmly to the flap. I use clear quilting thread so that it doesn’t show on the case.
