A fan has written to be about the history behind the movie the brute with Sarah Douglas.

About THE BRUTE: Sorry, the film was actually made in 1976, released theatrically in Great Britain the following year. It was not rated "R", since such a rating does not exist in England, but X instead (not to be confused with the US X rating !)
I found the film very good, a very well written and exciting thriller about domestic violence. Why this is almost unknown today is really beyond me. It really deserves to be seen. David FENTON wrote in 10 YEARS OF TERROR. BRITISH HORROR FILMS OF THE 1970ies that the film is a "real curio. It canīt seem to decide whether to be a serious film or a full blown exploitation flick." (p. 236) Yeah, right - much violence, much nudity and sex, however a statement against wife beating. All turn in powerhouse performances - especially Julian GLOVER as ultra-violent hubby. You are right about the violence - the scene where Dianeīs husband threatens her with a red hot branding iron made me cringe.
Best,
Manfred

YEAR RELEASED: 1973

CAST: Sarah Douglas, Julian Glover, Peter Bull, Bruce Robinson, Suzanne Stone, and Jenny Twigge.

DIRECTED BY: Gerry O'Hara

Sarah plays Diane. A young Model who is married to Teddy (Julian Glover). They live in a small town in England. They have one son named Tim. Diane has a secret, She is beaten by her Husband when he gets drunk or is upset about something. The movie is about spousal abuse. It's not a pretty sight and at times the movie does get very intense. The movie was made in 1973. This movie plays like a tv movie of the week, however its rated R for the intense violence's about the spousal abuse. People who have experienced this... probably will have a hard time watching it.

Some people might remember the movie Sleeping with the Enemy with Julia Roberts. This is a much better movie and much more intense. A more realistic version of spousal abuse.

This was Sarah first leading role. She plays a strong character that later she would use to play great villains. She is also very young and beautiful. She made this movie before The People That Time Forgot. before I forget, Sarah never does nudity. She does show a little bit in this movie. Alot of the scenes are hard to see.

Fans of this site will know that I have been searching for this movie for a while. Just like Indiana Jones was searching for the lost Ark. With the success of this site. A fan gave me a chance to own my own copy of the movie. A special thanks to Jackie for the video.

See the bigger version at the bottom of the page. You can read the back of the video cover. Sarah was surprised to hear about it. She didn't think any copies existed. I remember seeing the video for sale on EBay, but I was not looking for the video at the time.

Sarah Douglas fan: Adam Berry owns the video of The Brute. He sent me a scan of the video cover. "I have seen the movie and I have to say that Sarah puts in a brilliant performance." Adam. It did take him some time to track down the video.

Sarah did this movie back in 1973. It was her first starring role. Here is what Sarah had to say about it (From the Conan The Destroyer Press kit) "It was fearfully grim, all about wife beating, but it did give me 87 minutes out of 90 screen-time, which is the reason for doing it. It also became something of a cult thing, it goes on running forever in the West End."

Julian Glover also starred in the movie. He would later have roles in The Empire Strikes Back and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I have not seen this movie yet. I have heard just a little bit about it. This is the first time that I have seen pictures from the movie. It's on the PAL system in England and can be only seen overseas at this time.
