Company Background:
The 43d Battalion of Va. Cav. Co. "A"
of "Mosby's Partisan Rangers" was organized on
June 10, 1863.
The 43d operated mainly behind enemy lines in and around Loudin, Fairfax & Farquier Counties of Northern Virginia. This area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy". The 43d was extremely helpful in scouting and harassing the enemy. This one small Battalion, never much more than two hundred strong managed to divert in numbers the attention of at least one Union Division. Their tactics were mostly hit and run disappearing in a ghostlike fashion. At wars end the 43d never surrendered, Mosby simply disbanded the Battalion.
