"Itchy again Req? I've oiled you at least a dozen times today!" E'tarin exclaimed in cheerful dismay. The brown weyrling crooned plaintively. No, not a dozen, only...five times! Pleease? Requarith pleaded, though it was really not necessary. E'tarin had already whipped out the dragon oil. "Okay now, love?" the rider asked patiently, grinning. Yes. Ahhh, that feels good! the young brown sighed and relaxed under his rider's diligent hands.
As E'tarin thoroughly oiled his dragon's soft hide, he also appraised the brown. Nice wings, exactly the right size. Forelegs only a little bit short. Head and neck proportioned just right. Tail a tad long. A very nice-sized brown, almost as big as the smaller bronze weyrlings. the rider thought proudly, forgetting that Requarith could hear every word in his mind. Is it good to be big? the young dragon asked anxiously, cocking his head. "Silly, of course it's good to be as big as you are. The older brownriders say that the greens like-" E'train abruptly stopped, not wishing to discuss that subject with his still-immature dragon. The greens like what? Requarith inquired curiously. "Oh nothing, dear, don't worry. I was just thinking." E'tarin replied reassuringly.
Wait a second. Since Aleori Impressed a green, and I a brown, perhaps Requarith could catch her Varuith in flight and we could be weyrmates! The young brownrider realized, sighing happily. He'd liked Aleori from the moment he saw her as a Candidate, and she seemed to have an affinity for E'tarin as well. Please keep rubbing! My hide is all dry and itchy! Requarith interrupted impetuously. E'tarin smiled and renewed his oiling. Time enough to think of Aleori later.
"Requarith! Guess what?! Guess what?! Guess what?!" E'tarin bounced excitedly into the weyr, acting like a boy just Searched rather than the 18-Turn old dragonrider he was. Requarith swung his head around and gazed calmly at his rider with mildly curious eyes. What is it, rider mine? the brown asked patiently. "We've been made WINGSECONDS of the Misterioso Calina Wing! Isn't it great?" E'tarin declared, throwing two arms around his dragon's great neck and hugging Requarith fiercely. Isn't that the wing that doesn't have any riders except the Wingleader? the brown dragon inquired after a moment. "Oh, yeah, it is. But I'm told most of the new weyrlings will fly in our wing when they finish weyrling training. There sure are a lot of young dragons in the Barracks! A gold, two bronzes, three browns, three blues, four greens and a special green-white, if I remember correctly. Enough to be a whole clutch of dragons! Aleori and her Varuith are to fly in the Rayo de Luna Wing. Do you like Varuith?" E'tarin raised his eyebrows. She is a beautiful green, very beautiful and very strong. I will have to fly hard to catch her. Requarith replied in unruffled tones, though his eyes whirled a little faster. "You're the best brown in the world, Req! I love you." the rider hugged his dragon again. The brown crooned.
