The team just did not perform as a top ten DIV VAA team this game. Only Soph guard Billy Hague really played an A game with 17 points, shooting 75% from 3 point range, making 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. He also had no turnovers at all.Senior captain Josh Hamilton had 22 points and 6 rebounds but shot a miserable 15% Fg percentage and missed several critical 3 pointers in the fourth quarter that would have brought the team back into contention. He had two turnovers that cost four points. Trevor Wagstaffe and Zach Howard also had poor games this afternoon with both having critical turnovers resulting in important Royal points. The frontline of Loren Barton, Nate Glass and Mike Sullivan had a combined 12 rebounds for the game and not many in the fourth quarter. Glass and Barton also had a combined 5 turnovers which should not happen to big men. And Second team center Sam Sullivan cost the team four points with a irrational technical foul. This is the second time this season that someone on the team has had a technical foul which contributed to a game loss. In the final quarter the Patriots took ill-advised shots and were only getting one shot per time down the court. It is sad that HCS has even three of their four losses this season. They should have only lost to Granite Hills this year and be 11-1 right now. Trevor Wagstaffe has got to take charge as the starting point guard. He has to stop throwing the ball to players who can not catch and increase the speed of his throws to those players that can catch. He has to start making shots to keep defenses honest. Josh Hamilton has got to increase his FG percentage and make wise decisions on taking high percentage shots. He needs to continue to rebound as he did in the Grace Brethren game. Billy Hague and Mike Sullivan have to develop a consistency in their day-in day-out play. Both should average 8-14 points a game. Lorne Barton and Nate Glass have got to get their rebounding game going. Every loss this season has been when HCS has 26 or less rebounds in a night. They play like 6 footers rather than true big men generally. The same goes for Sam Sullivan when he is in the game. He is a strong six ' 2" guy who needs to play like that. Zach Howard has got to stop his turnovers. He is generally a good scorer much like Jesse McDonald last year but with the turnovers, the coach cannot afford to put him in the fourth quarter. The team as a whole has to improve their free throw shooting. There is no reason not to be shooting 85-90% from the charity line. And the coaching staff obviously has to practice the team in how to properly play the last five minutes of a game in which they are losing or winning. They clearly have no idea at this moment as shown in this game and the Linfield game. The frustration for this fan is that this team quite possibly could be the best team HCS ever fielded but they sometimes play like one of the worse teams in the last six years. Had they been 11-1 now, they clearly could be ranked number one and get a top bracket position and play chumps early on rather than quality teams in the playoffs. HCS is presently 8-4 and has two tough games next week which will define their character prior to the opening of league play.
