I drove to work Jen’s Café.
I ran in and ran back out because I forgot to lock the door and I ran back in. Stephanie was standing there waiting for me.
“I’m so sorry I’m late!” I put my apron on and started to work.
“Don’t worry, Mike isn’t here yet.” she said.
“Good!”
Mike is my boss. If anyone is late they get a yellow card. A yellow card means that you have done something wrong. Yeah I know duh. You can only get three of them cause once you get four you get a pink card and then your fired.
It was about 3:16 when I was getting a hot plain black coffee when Stephanie said, “Look at that cutie who walked in!”
I turned around and saw Nick!
“Oh my gosh!” I whispered.
“What?”
“He tripped over me at the beach.”
She laughed out loud. I hit her on the shoulder, not really hard, “I’ll get him and you give this to that guy over there.”
“Okay,” she said with a wink.
“Whatever,” I told her.
I walked up to the service counter.
“Hello, welcome to Jen’s Café how my I help you?”
He smiled, “Oh hey Meghan. I was driving by and I saw this Café shop and I just had to come. Ah…what do you have?”
“Well, we have lots of choices to choose from and the special which I my say is the best.”
“Oh, okay then I’ll take your opinion and take the special.”
“A there’s only one problem.”
“What?”
“It takes forever to finish.”
“That’s okay. I got all day.”
“Okay take a seat and I’ll get you your special.” He smiled and sat down in the front table.
I smiled at him and went and grabbed a cup. He was so sweet!
I went over and started to make the special for special Nick. Why did I say that?
“Who is he?” Stephanie asked me.
“His name is Nick. Why?”
“Because I think you got a thing for him!”
“Oh please!”
“You do!”
“No I don’t!”
“Oh someone else it there. I better go deal with him.”
“Yeah you better go,” I said with a giggle. I looked at Nick he was bored you could tell because he was looking around the place and you could tell he was nervous because he was biting his nails. I signed. Something was coming over me because I was so nervous and I didn’t know why. When I was done with his coffee I walked over and handed it to him.
“Here you go,” I said trying not to spill it.
He took his hand out of his mouth, “Thank you.”
“No problem.”
He took the cup and took a sip of it; “This is great!”
“Told ya so.”
“Hey Meg,” Stephanie said.
I turned and saw her with her purse.
“What?”
“Laura will be late,” then she looked out the door, “or she’s here.”
“Okay, see ya later.” She walked out as Laura walked in.
“Hey Meg,” she said.
“Hey.” I looked at Nick he was still drinking his coffee, “you know if you drink that fast your going to get a headache.”
“Okay. I’ll slow down. So you’re new.”
“Yeah, how did you know?”
“It’s not everyday I see you. And I’ve lived here for along time.”
“Oh well, my roommate, Wendy, and I moved from California to here about a month ago.”
“Oh how do you like Florida?”
“I love it! The sunshine, scuba diving, the ocean, it’s just all great! But I haven’t been able to go out very often.”
“Why not?” Nick asked curiously.
“Well, most of are stuff is not all moved in yet and we can’t find anyone to help us move it in.”
“I’ll help,” he said.
“No you don’t have to.”
“Well, I want to. Besides it will makeup what I did at the beach.”
“Okay but you don’t know where I live and I get off in four hours.”
He got another chair and put his feet up.
“What are you doing?” I asked him.
“I’m going to stay and wait.”
“But…”
“No, I have nothing to do. Besides, I’m not done with my drink.”
“Coffee.”
“Whatever.”
I smiled.
We kept talking. It was about 5:35 when Mike came in.
“Oh crud!” I whispered.
“What?” he whispered back.
“That’s my boss and I’m going to get in trouble!”
“Why?”
“To talking to you and not doing my job.”
I walked to the counter.
“Meghan, I need to talk to you…” Mike started.
“Excuse me sir?” Nick said as he stood up.
Mike turned around, “Yes sir? May I help you?”
“I just wanted to say the this young lady, Meghan, is doing the best job I have ever seen in any Café. And I strongly suggest that everyone should come there. I personally think this is the best Café! And best waitress!”
My jaw dropped in surprised and my eyes went wide. I must have been bright red because my face felt so warm.
“Ah…yes thank you sir,” Mike said just as surprised as I was.
Nick sat down and took another sip of his coffee. Mike turned back to me, “As I was saying, you’re doing a great job and your going to get the Christmas bonus.”
“Ahh…thanks Mike,” I said.
“Keep up with the good work!” then he walked in his office.
I looked at Nick confused.
“You owe me,” he said.
I nodded my head and went to the next customer.
Laura looked at me and smiled.
