Imadoki Review

Hey! For some reason I stumbled into this manga. It's from Yuu Watase-san. (Errr, Damn I wish I could draw like her!)Anyways, the story is about a girl named Tanpopo Yamazaki (Tanpopo is translated as dandalion), who just transferred to Meioschool in Tokyo, leaving her grandparents and friends in Hokkaido (can't spell). Tanpopo transferred in Meioschool through testing exams. On her first day she was late and went to see the school. But she couldn't get into the front lobby, so she went to the back. There, Tanpopo met a handsome young man (and I mean handsome!) holding a trowel and planting a dandalion. He was very nice and kind to Tanpopo and even gave her his handerchief to bandage her leg (she fell/flew off her bike trying to get to the back and wounded her leg). Tanpopo was happy that she found a new friend and hopes that she'll make more friends. The handsome guy says that that's not possible. Tanpopo doesn't know what he means and he tells her to go home because it's late and that she should start school tomorrow. Later, Tanpopo is psyched that she got a new friend in her new school and calls him Trowel-boy because she didn't catch his name.

The next day, Tanpopo goes to her new school and finds out that Meioschool is based socially on status and that if you're rich then you are popular and if you only got into Meioschool through testing exams it means you are considered low-life and looked down upon. She meets up with Trowel-boy again and finds out his name is Kouki Kugyou, the richest and most popular guy in school. Kouki acts like he's never seen her before and ignores her. Then he insults her by pulling out the dandalion that they planted together the day before and yells out to everyone that they should pull out all the weeds (Meaning Tanpopo).(Meany)>_< Everyone calls her 'weed' and bash her for even trying to talk to Kouki. Tanpopo thinks that Kouki has a split personality and persists on being his friend. And so the story begins... or whatever.

Anyway,Imadoki (translates as This Day and Age), is all about Tanpopo trying to befriend Kouki. But it's not as easy as it seems. Kouki only thinks that Tanpopo only wants to suck up to him because he is rich just like everyone else does. But Tanpopo shows him that she really does want to be friends with him.

All throughout the bashing and the abuse that she gets in her school, Tanpopo remains happy and cheery and just smiles throughout all the things that happen to her (think Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi). Imadoki is a really great manga. And is REALLY lighter than Watase-san's other works. It doesn't have anything to do with magic or anything TOO serious (when I mean TOO serious I mean not trying to kill anyone kinda serious). I mean don't get me wrong, it does deal with some serious subjects but not as serious as that of Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres... It's a sweet manga and if you're into the romance is COOL kinda stories than I suggest that you look at this. To tell you the truth I think Imadoki is like Hana Yori Dango and Peach Girl meets Miaka. But Watase-san still gives it that same style that makes her work soo great.
