The 1998 Southern Colorado Closed
Championship took place in Colorado Springs on February
21-22. The six person round robin brought together some
of the strongest chessplayers from the southern half of
the state. Bob
Fordon from Montrose won 1st
prize ($100),
Dan Avery from Colorado Springs
captured 2nd prize ($50), and Ron Deike from
Caņon City took 3rd prize ($25).
The time controls used
were 40/90 followed by 25/60. Dean Brown, Roy Heath, and
Ken Schwartz directed the tournament. Thanks to the Colorado Springs Chess Club for serving as sponsoring affiliate, paying
all rating fees, and contributing $25 to the prize fund.
