Rebuttal to Site Circulating About Me
First, that site is based on Google searches and archive.org searches.
A lot of people have tried to discredit my involvement in the scene.
I use to be part of Release on Rampage, then I moved on to Reflux
with tklp. I supplied a few games, wrote for RCN, then went on to
other groups. Was a site coordinator for Motiv8, ran RavenSoft
(released 0day utils), and couriered for groups such as SWaT and
Addiction. Then I moved into the mp3 scene under the first mp3 group,
CDA. Yeah, those were the days of command-line ripping. I still
liked writing, so I started up Scene Review, and it was widely read.
It had its followers and its haters, much like any publication out
right now. It closed because a tv station narc'd on the site on the
air. Anyways, I programmed a few linux tools here and there, publicized
the glftpd fix so no more warez sites got 0wn3d. Started Win32 programming
and made my first program -- MyAdvantage. That landed me a job with
AllAdvantage. Did some work for them until their death. While that was
happening, I made an installer for Razor (used in the release Driver),
made an intro for the game Falcon 4 (released by Paradigm) and such. While
I was in Razor, I pushed out a few Unreal Tournament patches (nothing else
was due out that week). Then I was in Divine for awhile, and was helping
to do some releases while waiting on this guy from Ubisoft to get me
Rayman 2. Security tightened and the guy almost got caught getting a copy so
he said he couldn't do it. Anyways, after Divine, I went into the Dreamcast
scene and did some news things. I wasn't kicked off that site, I just lost
my drive for updating that site every day while the owners made all the cash
(they made deals with some DC hardware resellers to get DC hardware, as well
as other deals for ads). I still updated from time to time, but I was burnt.
The interviews were real, atleast they were conducted with my mindset being
that they were real. I didn't conjure up those interviews myself; I wasn't
out to fool anyone. So...after that Dreamcast phase, I went to do some stuff
for Napster. After about 8 months of it, I left. Let's see..what else..
Oh, I'm heterosexual. Oh yeah, I administrated Kalifornia. I did not own the
machine, nor have I ever met the owner. There were about six of us
administrators. Hmm..the Quake 3 stuff. Yeah, I released some Quake 3 hacks
and cheats. Ofcourse some people would be mad, just as some people are mad
that I'm giving the general scene people information on scene specifics. So
anyways, I know this has nothing to do with the stuff you came here to see,
but I felt a rebuttal was needed because I'm doing this, and I'm not gaining
anything out of it. If there is anything wrong with what I'm posting, tell
me and I'll change/remove it. I'm not out to fool the public, I'm out to
inform it.
UPDATE: ALL SITES UNRELATED TO BUSTS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FOR THEIR SECURITY. IF YOU
SEE A MIRROR OF THIS PAGE WITH THE SITE NAMES ON IT, IT IS AN OLD MIRROR!
============================================================= Latest Updates (newest updates at the bottom of the section):
=============================================================
Supposedly a HUGE operation (sting, bust, etc) going on at Utwente (.nl,
Twente University). One of the admins there says that a lot of logging is
going on. All x3 rated sites are there. Lots of shells, sites. Most of the
couriers use it. Euro sites depend on it. The USA side of couriers depend
on RIT. These two universities were the mothership.
doodad, a member of POP, was busted. He was only in POP, so logic suggests
they are targetting POP as well
RTSMP3 currently shutdown, but will return in the future
Take a look at RIT's traffic analysis after the busts here:
http://www.rit.edu/network/mrtg-inet/internet1.html
There was Four boxes at MIT's Economic department (one of the boxes
weighed 175 pounds!). Fatal Error, 1.2 terabytes -- it had new and classic
DivX, PS2/PSX/DC, VCD, and ISO game archive. Lake of Fire, 400GB -- it was a
MP3 archive. Packet Storm, 600GB -- it was an util archive. Then at least one
other box for a drop site for DOD and another group. The three main boxes were
not affiliated with any other group, but rather private sites for DOD.
aPC (mp3) member said: "we're just relaxing and letting time do the
healing. sooner or later everything will be back to normal"
EGO (mp3) still very active. Latest release: Lil Bow Wow, full album
RNS (mp3) still very active. Latest release was today: 2pac, full
album
RogueWarriorz, a very secretive group, was infilitrated by an FBI agent.
RogueWarriorz is a collection of members from other groups with access to over
40 sites. The membership was roughly around 70. The FBI operated the site out
of Las Vegas. The agent pretended to be two people, Shatter and Twisted. The
site was called ShatNet. Other sites from RogueWarriorz are The Egg Carton,
which receives EGO and DGN pre's. Elisa ran it from San Jose edu. ShatNet
was the FBI site. A few members of the group told me his icq # is 95996443.
He's Special Agent Ray Leber from the Las Vegas FBI Field Office
(702-385-1281). The US Attorney investigating this is Matt Parrella
(702-388-6336).
The admin of pspt.fi (antti lyytinen), Polytechnic of Pohjois-Savo, got
arrested. He lived in Kuopio, Finland. His nick used to be "Ice". The sites is
ran was LA (Lunatic Asylum), and the other was the ISO counterpart. Rumor is
that they didn't get either one of the site boxes, but ftp.pspt.fi (thinking
it was it). http://edome.fi.soneraplaza.net/yhteisot/#1008325896
cc-hut (helsinki university of technology) backbone is also due for
investigations. However, it will be part of the Swedish investigations.
cc-hut is the hut.fi backbone (uu.net/fu.net hut.fi backbone). ATM
connection helsinki<->stockholm start there
LiGHTNiNG (EU/US) Divx group has ceased opperations untill after new
years
A short bio about Chris Tresco (aka bigrar) in the Boston Globe. http://digitalmass.boston.com/news/2001/12/12/mit.html
Special Agent Ray Leber of the FBI spoke at the NARCA (National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys) conference in Fall of 2001 (October 12 and 13). His topic was Computer and Internet Security. His synopsis: "Dependency on computers has left numerous businesses vulnerable to sabotage. Have you safeguarded your computers from viruses, hackers, and employee disturbances? This non-technical presentation will provide you with guidelines to prevent computer intrusion. Learn more about passwords, firewalls, hardware/software interaction, and network operation to protect your organization." To verify, call 1-800-633-6069. The NARCO is at 8201 Greensboro Drive, Suite 300, McLean, VA 22102
Special Agent Ray Leber of the FBI spoke for The Association of Information Technology Professionals on August 31, 2000. It was held at the Southwest Gas Corp. offices, 5241 Spring Mountain Road. The topic was computer security and law enforcement. To verify, call the Las Vegas Review and ask for the August 28, 2000 edition
Special Agent Ray Leber talks with a member of RogueWarriorz via ICQ The link is here: http://www.mindnmatter.net/rayleber.txt If you have any more information regarding Special Agent Ray Leber of the FBI, please bring it to my attention
In TCF's latest release, The Princess Diaries (NTSC DivX), they say: "Our respect goes out to the members of DOD/RAZOR1911 and to all other groups affected by the busts. We at TCF feel that this tragedy has spawned a realization in our lives and we have decided that we should vanish from the scene for a while if not forever. Don't expect to see many releases from us in the near future, a few christmas presents at most. It's been fun guys, cya in the new year? I guess the feds couldn't find osama so they started to fuck with us..."
Centropy has disbanded permanently.
Ray Leber, FBI Special Agent, went by the efnet nicks of "Twistd^" and "^shatter", with the ^ on either end of the nick.
8 members of RogueWarriorz were busted. It seems excessive for such a little group. The names were: Elisa (San Jose, United States), Jozef (Saskatoon, Canada), Bierkrug (Vancouver, Canada), Lord Hacker (United States), Axxess (Washington State, United States), Waldorf (United States), Demonfurby (United Sites), and Dr Infothief (Long Island, United States). The leader of RogueWarriorz believes Elisa was a member of DoD, and that made their group a target (added on to that there was a FBI agent in the team). That's two more busts to add to Canada. Also, jozef says the FBI asked them something about "Down Hiller" or "downhiller" or something like that.
Regarding IRC security, I've been told it's very possible that servers can be logged. It is possible to run a "named pipe" on a file system of the server running the ircd daemon. Set the server to use the pipe as the filename for the debug logfile. The way it works is that it's just like a pipe but part of the file system, so the ircd daemon would write to the pipe. A script could then read from the pipe and then write only the relevant data (ie. particular channels or nicks). The way name pipes work is that you create two pipes on the file system (with the correct minor and major device numbers to link them together), then you can write to one side of the pipe and read from the other. Here's a link on named pipes: http://www.erlenstar.demon.co.uk/unix/faq_3.html#SEC41. Now, we took the latest Hybrid source (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ircd-hybrid/ircd-hybrid-6.2.tgz) and analyzed it for security features. ircd-hybrid version 6.2 does not contain any SSL hooks or native RSA algorithms in the code. The encryption would need to be ipsec or vpn level. In any case, it would be quite a bit of overhead for terabytes of data. ircd would gack if it had to encrypt gigs per second. Nothing but the password encrypting routines for oper passwords were in the source (crypt function is built into the OS specifically for passwords).

FTF (aka Fuck The Fed) has just released "Vanilla Sky" telesync. Their message: "YOU FEDS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF PICKING ON PEOPLE WHEN YOU GOT TERRORISTS AND A WAR GOING ON"
HiTech666 was busted Saturday. He's been retired for half a year. He was PWZ (PsychoWarez)/FTS (Fantasy, same group as avec, thrawn, and matsmad. He was former leader)/Razor 1911 (supplier)/Myth (supplier/rip)/Deviance (supplier)/RTS. HiTech666 was sitting on his computer on a few private networks, including mythnet (Myth's private IRC network), when 2 unmarked cars pulled up. Mounties got out. He managed to close a few IRC windows before they came into his room. He made a cell phone call from the bathroom to tell his friend that he was being raided at the moment. He hasn't picked up his cell phone since. HiTech666 is under house arrest at the moment. His PC was taken.
Mindscape (mp3) has temporarily ceased operations
Rocco (French XXX DivX) said they will continue to release. They have just opened up three new sites (100 Mbit in Germany and England). Their three latest releases are: Delires_Obscenes_XXX_DIVX-Rocco, BELLE.DU.X-DVDRIP-FRENCH-DIVXXX-ROCCO, and LES.CONTES.PERVERS.FRENCH.DVDRIP.DIVX4.XXX-RoCcO.
Information about radsl. radsl lives in Eugene, Oregon. He use to work at Symantec as a Systems Engineer. Symantec flew him around the country to sell corporate licenses of their software. He supplied all of DoD's Symantec releases. He is also a founder of Popz and supplied a few titles for them.
Shark was a police officer in Sydney, Australia. He wasn't an informant though, but rather a target of the busts.
About the busts at Pohjois-Savo Polytechnic, the man arrested was neither a student nor a worker. The administration is wondering how he got access. The police doesn't know specifically how the crime was committed. http://www.sektori.com/uutiset/3051/ammattikorkean and http://www.jippii.fi/uutiset/kotimaa/?aid=51031
Fairlight releases first game ISO since busts. The game is Capitalism II from Ubi Soft. In the release nfo, it features Santa Claus waving merrily to us sceners. At the bottom from Fairlight: "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year".
Although the U.S. Customs office declares that this fact sheet was up December 11, in fact, it was just put up. It has 4 questions, even though the header says three (and the fact sheet answers four totally different questions). At the bottom: "Report Drug Smuggling". http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/hot-new/pressrel/2001/1211-01.htm
Chris Tresco (aka bigrar)'s email at mit was ctresco@economics.mit.edu. His direct line was (617) 258-9345. He was in building E52-249. His boss was Lisa Briggs (which collaborates with the story below). Her email is lbriggs@economics.mit.edu. January 31 of this year, bigrar applied for efnet.mit.edu to be linked to efnet. The machine he wanted connected was a Pentium III 655 MHz FreeBSD 4.2 with 256mb ram. The IRCD running was version 2.6/hybrid-6.0. His Co-Admin on the application was Arnvid Karstad, aka ievil
Drink or Die was also a contributor to the United Devices cause. bigrar was obviously #1. http://www.statsman.org/udstats/html/337.html
Cool story/article about warez. Briefly mentions DOD. Months old, but it notes the notoriety of DOD and their quality. http://www.heise.de/tp/english/inhalt/te/9170/1.html

Confirmed story surrounding bigrar (chris tresco) and a former
associate: I worked at the economics department back in july of 2001. I
started working with 5 other northeastern university students in the systems
administration department. One of which was Chris Tresco, the member of DoD.
They all were a great bunch of people, really friendly, and down-to-earth.
Summer is pretty slow at MIT because not too much goes on besides grad student
work. The first day of work i went through an "initiation" in which we
went out to eat at the "Cheesecake Factory" resturant in Cambridge, a very
posh resturant. My initiation was to select the appetizers for the rest of the
department, if they liked my choices then i would become a part of the group,
otherwise... i don't know. The talk around the table focused on our manager
Lisa talking about an ex-employee who used to screw around with rather ugly
women, and how he was a man-whore, etc. Very casual, even almost vulgar
conversation. I felt very at ease, they were close, and quickly became
friendly towards me. The bill was quite expensive, but of course MIT paid.
This was monday. Later that day Chris and the other guys showed me the
systems, and explained what each machine did, and the basic design of the
network. I noticed a rather large file server, and when i asked what it did,
Chris explained that it was his own machine. I browsed the web Tuesday
rolled around and I was updating different professors homepages with a new
design template. Not too much really, i finished the job quickly. Later in the
afternoon, the manager Lisa came into our office and asked us "Do you guys
need anything?". Chris turned and said "I could use a beer." another guy said
"How about a foot massage?", i turned and said "I could use a back rub." She
laughed and returned to her office. I spent the rest of the day updaing the
website, and watching the guys messaround with the mp3 server, and the music
one guy was making with Cubase. I had yet to fill out any working papers
as it was only my 2nd day working. Wednesday rolled around, and the day
started as normal. Chris showed me his computer, and i noticed the 3+
terabytes of disk space it had. He casually informed me that it was a DoD
"Drop box", and that if i created a directory with the name of a software, or
mp3 title, that in the directory the next day it would appear there, almost
like magic. Later in the afternoon, the manager called me into her office,
i thought she was going to have me fill out some forms for work. Once i was in
her office, she had me sit down. "About that joke you made yesterday..."
she said. "Umm, which one was that..." I replied "The one about the back
rub.... i didn't appreciate that, it was a direct insult to my authority." She
said. "Oh, that one.... I'm sorry, but i didn't really mean anything by it,
the other guys were joking around as well, and i didn't think anything of it.
I replied, suprised. "Well i didn't think it was very professional, and
with the Professors and expensive equipment we have here at MIT, i expeceted a
higher level of professionalism from you." She said. "Oh.... well you guys
all seemed to be pretty relaxed. With no dress code, and you're down-to-earth,
and friendly personalities, you all seemed like a bunch of bar-mates, and just
happen to work together. I thought my comment was right at home. I'm sorry,
but i guess i shouldn't have said that afterall." I said shocked. "Well,
i'm sorry, but i'm going to have to let you go." She said quickly. "You
mean i'm fired? Don't i get any warning, or second chance or anything? I
mean... i didn't really mean anything by it, it was just friendly banter. I
said be wildered. "I'm sorry, but i feel that it upsurped my authority, and
we expect a high level of professionalism here. She said. "Well thats
funny, because with the conversation at lunch on monday, the birkenstock
sandals, t-shirts, shorts, and most of all, the warez server in the other
room, i didn't really see a high level of professionalism, if any whatsoever."
I snapped. "I'm sorry, my decision is final, you can leave now if you like.
Or finish out the rest of the day..." She said, and looked away. I got paid
for the rest of the week, and left. Then I heard this story. I guess
she'll not be working long after this, it was right under her nose. Good
managering i guess. I'm glad i got fired.
Another story from a Purdue university student: I attend Purdue
University and i can tell for sure that there is now reason for there to be
software piracy. tell me tell you why. Purdue University has an Agreement
with Microsoft which enable us to recive original, lisenced versions of
original Microsft Software for 5$. u can check out the detaile here>
http://www.purdue.edu/MSCA/. We get all software right from Windows Xp to
office to the full 6cd pack of Visual Studio 6 for only 5 dollars. Every
student is entitle to a copy and there are no limitations. Futhermore,
Purdue's Computer society host and Ftp mirror for almost all the possible
Linux ditro's thereby not even needing us to use up extra bandwidth to
download from outside. Very recently i belive there has even been
agreement to let the Computer Science Majors to download all of the Microsoft
software free of charge from a web server starting from even the arabic
version of Windows 3.11 up till windows Xp. And ALL this this is being done
legally. therefore i see no reason for there to be Software piracy at Purdue
University. The article just mentions there had been raid and i think this is
just to Defame Purdue Univsity. It does not even say that any thing was
confiscated at purdue university - Just another Angry purdue Student

TFL says: We would like to make something very clear. There is a
huge misunderstanding as to why we release the programs to the end user.
Basically this is why: Lots of applications cost a lot more money than
endusers can afford (some cost $50,000+). We release a FULLY functional
program for endusers to evaluate, learn, try or compare and then decide if
it's right for him/her. We do NOT release these applications for companies to
use them in a working enviroment where they would not have to buy them from
the original maker, therefore COMPLETELY misrepresenting our goal. At this
case we ENCOURAGE original makers to come to such companies and do whatever
they need to them. Moral of this is: If you use programs at work for anything
rather than evaluating BEFORE buying, you deserve to be caught!

STREAM (0day) is dead
Regarding IRC server logging I asked a irc admin friend of mine
about what he thinks. He said the following was just 15 days
worth: Server send: 56.95 Gigabytes ( 391.5 K/s) Server
recv: 52.13 Gigabytes ( 23.2 K/s) On average, 2GB of data atleast
everyday. To log all that, should have a lot of TB's. I then asked him if I
could parse the info as it streams. He said the connections between the
servers are encrypted and he doesn't know of any fed servers that get the
traffic through. And even if there was one, they'd have to work against the
cryptos with all that traffic. A good link to read about how opers do not
snoop (I am an ex-efnet ircoper) would be
