SIX RABBITS AND A TEDDY
STORY BY
TRAVEN COLLINS
for little ones

It was a stark and balmy night
In the middle of the month of June
And I lay daydreaming
by the light of a silver moon

My teddy-bear was sleeping
In his favourite old armchair
And through my open window I could hear
The sounds of the world out there

Somewhere down the street a dog barked
Somewhere else a rooster crowed
Somewhere across the town around about
A car drove down a road

I was actually feeling quite alert
And now I was wide awake
‘Get out of bed’ my teddybear said
‘There’s A journey you must make.’

Now I’d had my teddybear
Since as long as I could recall
But as far as conversations go
We’d never had one at all.

So I was quite surprised to say the least
When my teddybear started to speak
I said ‘But you’re just a toy, a nice toy okay,
How come you’re giving cheek?’

My teddybear said ‘well it is true
That I havent had much to say
But I speak when it’s important
And something important is happening today.’

‘So if you would be so kind,’said teddy,
‘As to trust in what I say
I’ll show you a very big secret
If you’ll come outside and play.’

I saw the flashing numbers
On my little clock by the bed
It was four o’clock in the morning
So my little alarm clock read

‘That’s the darkest hour,’ said teddy
‘The time when all the dogs howl
And it’s called The Hour of The Wolf
For the wolves come out to prowl’

And I said to the teddy I’m scared of wolves
Especially the hungry ones
And teddy said ‘now they won’t eat you,
Wolves only eat nice currant buns.’

And I said to teddy ‘it’s very very late
And I don’t know where you want me to go.
If I have to go out somewhere?
Should I let the family know?’

The teddy thought and thought and thought
As stared at the bedroom wall
He said ‘This is a secret mystery
Better tell nobody at all.’

So I got out of my cosy bed
Acting all quiet as a mouse
Walky walk on tippy-toe so I didn’t
Wake the rest of the house

And I dressed for a journey
Being sneaky as a fox
Put on jeans and an old jacket
Sneakers and fresh socks

I climbed through the window
And I heard that squeaky cry
The teddy said ‘hey don’t forget me
I can talk but I can’t walk by myself or fly.’

So I reached back and grabbed him
Went to the garden gate
With teddy tucked under my arm
Saying ‘hurry or we’ll be late!’

I said to my little talking teddy
‘I don’t even know your name.’
And the teddybear said ‘my name is Ed.
Short for Edward, and Teddy’s my nickname.’
Teddy said, ‘we are like police detectives
Trying to solve a case
Looking for a missing clue
That had vanished without trace.’

Teddy looked up at the night sky
With the moon and the stars
And said ‘I love all the planets like Venus
and Saturn and Mars

‘Oh, and Jupiter, Uranus,
Little Mercury too
Old far away Neptune,’ said Teddy
‘And even tiny Pluto’

Well, then we set out walking
Not making hardly a sound
Down the streets and roads and alleys
To the far side of this town

Teddy gave directions
The evening was so clear
The sound of my footsteps
Was the only thing we could hear

Teddy said did I know that
the million stars In The Milky Way
Were Like twinkly streetlamps
On a Teddy bear Cosmic Freeway?

I said that I didn’t know that
And teddy said that he wasn’t surprised
Teddy said I didn’t know much stuff
Because I didn’t use my eyes

we were out of the town now
Walking in a soft breeze
We wandered along a dirt track
Up a hill beyond the trees

And you could see the world turning
Teddy said, if you stood very still
In the whispering wind, the whispering wind
That blew on the top of the hill

we kept walking in moonlight
and when I heard a strange sound
I looked right and left abit worried
I looked quickly all around

I had never been this far
From my own home so late at night
I was just a tiny little bit scared
Kind of shaking with fright

But teddy said ‘it’s just a sound
Of an owl stretching big owl wings
The trees and birds won’t hurt us
As long as we think good things

And teddy said ‘don’t worry
I have a plan we can follow’
As he pointed my way to go
down into a deep hollow

And that’s when I saw down there
This most incredible sight
Down in the paddock across the way
Beneath the silver moonlight

I thought perhaps my eyes
Were playing tricks on me
I’d never seen a thing so weird
And I’ve seen some weird things, believe me.

Around an old broken fencepost
There were six rabbits all dancing
Running around in circles, circles
rabbits jumping and prancing

It was like they were skipping
To some unheard tune
As they pranced on their hind legs
And raised their paws at the moon

Now I can't tell you anymore
Because I promised that dancing bunny team
In fact forget everything I've said here
Um...yeah...it was just a silly dream!!

and that is all the story we are allowed to tell because the rabbits, foxes and hares union have taken legal action for infringement of copyright and these matters are now to be argued in court.

(take me back to the top of the page please, I'm real tired!)
