FLYING TIGERS

Third Millennia Games 1973

Lou Zocchi

The Classic Flying Tigers game from Zocchi Games with numerous variants and optional rules. Counter strength and losses are based on individual aircraft, but players are limited by the counter mix to a given number of squadrons. Two complete orders of battle include the historical Japanese Army Air Force and an Alternate History “What If” using aircraft from the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Flying Tigers may receive additional RAF support if the bases in Burma can be held. Land forces are abstracted and bases / cities fall based on bombing results that represent support for the ground armies. Alternate bomb load figures take into account aircraft performance at different ranges. Damage requirements to capture a base / city can be adjusted to take in account variable claims on aircraft performance as well as command organization and skill. Aircraft options include increased use of of drop tanks to extend range, lighter armament on earlier model Nakajima Ki-43 Oscars, and deployment of 20mm cannon armed Hawker Hurricane IIC models.

Chenanault’s First Fight by Against the Odds released this year provides a detailed order of battle with each squadron represented by three counters of approximate flight strength. The historical order of battle is used with a possibility of limited support from the Imperial Japanese Navy prior to their raids into the Indian Ocean. There is  even a chance for Vichy French appearance. Ground forces are represent by counters; from a British Armored Brigade, to Japanese Infantry Divisions and Nationalist Chinese Armies.

The game last from December 1941 until June 1942 with each month 15 turns in length. The American Volunteer Group became the 23rd Fighter Group on July 4, 1942 although only five of the original pilots transferred over to the USAAF.
