“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades into myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave birth to it comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was A beginning.”
The wind blew onward, going slightly north and east this time, towards the vast plains of the Caralain Grass where it beat at the back of a youthful wanderer. She looked up briefly as the strength of the wind made her footsteps momentarily lighter. But she was not enough to stop the wind and it blew onward.
The wind had almost blown itself out by the time it reached the River Erinin, but the coolness rising from the fast-flowing water gave it new strength. On the road that ran beside the river, heading south, a woman and a man traveled quickly on horseback. Neither bothered to pay attention to the wind and neither seemed even to notice it. Onward it rushed, heading ever eastward towards the Spine of the World.
Before it began the ascent into the mountains called the Spine of the World, it blew through the city of Cairhien. Over the walls, into the city it blew, through a window and into the room where man and a woman sat over tea. Even though the city of Cairhien was a formidable obstacle, the wind would not be stopped and it blew onward towards the Spine of the World. As it ran over the foothills and passes of the mountain range, it ran itself out and was no more than a breeze when it fluttered the hair of a tall figure making its through the rocky country. He looked up briefly before turning his attention back to his footing.
