As with many of the F-4 pages, this one will be a work in progress for some time. I will upload photos to begin with and then at a later time add comments.
VMFAT-101 Sharpshooters
The Sharpshooters
were activated 3 January,
1969 as one of two USMC F-4 conversion squadrons.
Initially equipped with the F-4B the F-4J, F-4N and
F-4S were later added. The last F-4 crew finished
training on the F-4S 20 May, 1987. Stationed at MCAS
Mirimar , VMFAT-101 is currently the USMC F-18
Hornet training squadron.
Being the Marine Corps F-4 training unit, VMFAT-101
had more aircraft on strength than a regular fighter
squadron. This provided more opportunity to see and
photograph the unit's aircraft.

155833 and 155872 at El Paso in April, 1984. Both
aircraft carry color and are in overall gull cray
rather than the drab scheme most USN aircraft carried
at the time. This was unusual to see on an F-4S.

F-4S 155862 in storage at
AMARC in April, 1987. The same airplane that was
photographed at ELP in VMFA-451 March, 1981 prior to
conversion to an F-4S. I have seen the same airplane
with different units after conversion, but this is one
of the few where it returned to its former unit. (CB)
