Goal:> To encourage critical thinking, personal expression, and tolerance for the opinions of other; to support students and teachers with opportunities to examine critical issues affecting their lives and their communities; to promote the recognition that free and open discussion is essential to the establishment and preservation of open societies.
Objectives:
Promote critical thinking and strong communication skills of Mongolian youth
Encourage youth interest in current social and political events and tolerance to different ideas
Promote public debate on hot issues in the country
Promote new teaching methodology
Program Description:
After carefully researching and preparing arguments, two teams of 2-3 students argue opposing sides of a proposition related to a social issue. An affirmative team offers arguments in support of the proposition and a negative argues against it. Both teams are expected to respond to each other's arguments and engage one another in an open and honest exchange of ideas. Students on debate teams engage one another in open and honest exchanges of ideas on current social, political, and cultural topics. Parents, other teachers, and community members are encouraged to participate as organizers, judges, fundraisers, and volunteers. Three principles of debate guide the program. 1) Debate to learn; 2) open and honest exchange of ideas; 3) debate with high respect to others.
How to participate in Our Club Activities for university students:
University students, teachers and youth organization leaders should visit Club Center to get information on how to form parliamentary debate club at the schools and get list of trained teachers and students.
Interested university students and teachers can apply to participate in up coming parliamentary debate seminar organized by the Berkeley Debate Club by signing up a sheet which students can get from Club Center.
Interested students and group of young people, youth organizations should contact with debate club leader of university to form debate club and activity at their universities
Once debate club established members should visit other university debate clubs to organize debate activities among two universities or just set up meeting on how to work effectively
Interested students and teachers could visit to the Open Debate Association Center at the MFOS also provide access to debate Website(www.soros.org/debate) link to research libraries and free media in order to get prepared for debate activities
Debate for Law students
Parliamentary Debate Program for Freshman students. (1st year),
Mock trial Debate for Sophmore stydents, Courtroom trial Debate for junior students, Practice debate in the Court for senior students.
