Mangalasasanams Page -- Thiruppavai

I hope you are enjoying the cyber tour of Sri Vaishnava Divyadesams and Sri Vaishnavism website. As part of this cyber tour, here is a small presentation -- Mangalasasanams and Pasurams (Divine hymns) of the various Azhwars. We start with Thiruppavai by Andal.

FOREWORD:

Thiruppavai could be recited everyday to invoke the blessings of the Lord Narayana. However, the month of Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January) is significant with respect to the recital of Thiruppavai. The month of Margazhi is sometimes known as Music Season in India. To that effect, one can witness the force by which the divine music takes over the reign in the country.

Sri Andal had Her Divine Incarnation at Sri Villiputhur. She had Her Divine birth as a daughter to Periyazhwar. From Her childhood days, She had a very strong devotion to the Lord of Sri Villiputhur (Sri Villiputhur is covered in detail in Pandianattuth Thirupathigal section). The custom in that time was unmarried women would be following a custom called paavai nonbu (a sort of prayer to the Lord). The climate in the month of Margazhi and that too in early mornings would be terribly cold. Andal, with Her friends would be starting off to the temple early in the mornings, reciting the Tiruppavai. Tiruppavai has 30 songs and the month of Margazhi has 29 days. One song is recited per day and the 30th song is recited on the first day of Thai (Makara Sankranthi). This tradition or custom is called as 'Thiruppavai Sathumurai'.

Needless to state that recital of Thiruppavai would invoke the blessings of the Lord and the Lordess, which is very essential for us in this mundane world and to seek Moksha.

This collection of Thiruppavai has been divided into five sections of six pasurams (songs) each.
