Chp 1
~Chapter 1~
The scream seemed to be coming from the beach. He quietly and carefully made his way over the sand and hid behind a huge rock embedded on the beach so he could see what the problem was from a safe distance. It was really dark so he couldn't really see anything except for the silouette of a woman walking down the shore. But she disappeared into the darkness a few seconds later. He suddenly realized that the screaming had stopped and scanned the beach. He saw a figure lying on the sand. Perfectly still. AJ cautiously walked over to it. As he got closer, the image took shape.
"Oh my God!"
A pair of wide opened and frightful eyes stared back at AJ from the lifeless body of a young girl. Her face had no color and was contorted from pain.
"Shit. I came too late."
Suddenly, someone grabbed his neck from behind and lifted him off the ground. He tried releasing himself but the grip was too tight. He couldn't even turn his head to look at his attacker. He could barely breathe and he couldn't scream. Then he felt something sharp penetrate his neck. A knife? No, it couldn't be. It was too small. He felt dizzy and weak. Everything was blurry. But then he heard a moan of pain, not from him, and was dropped to the ground.
His eyesight was fading, but he saw a pair of beautiful green worried eyes staring at him.
"I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner," a soft female voice said.
AJ couldn't respond. She slashed her wrist with her teeth, gently lifted his head, and put it against his lips.
"Drink," she commanded.
AJ couldn't do it. He was slowly slipping away. His last thoughts were about his Mom and his friends, who he would never see again.
"Drink!" she said again, this time more frantically.
He could taste the warm liquid on his lips. But it was too late. Everything turned black.
"No!" the woman screamed with the limp AJ in her arms. She gently set him down. "Dammit." There was nothing she could do now. "I'm sorry," she whispered, then solemnly left.
Denise was getting worried. AJ had been gone for a while.
"What could've happened? I shouldn't have let him go!" she scolded herself. She couldn't stand it any longer. The police would be here soon. She got out of the car and headed in the direction AJ went.
"Dear God, please don't let anything happen to my AJ," Denise silently prayed as she made her way over to the beach. She looked around hoping to spot AJ or anyone at all. She noticed two figures lying on the ground, fairly close to each other, off in the distance. "Oh my…" She ran to the one nearest her first. Much to her relief, it wasn't AJ. But she felt an an overwhelming sadness sweep over her. "Poor girl."
Then she slowly walked towards the other body. "No, no, no," she repeated over and over as she got closer. She finally ran the rest of the way and dropped to her knees. "NO!!!" She picked him up in her arms and shook him. "AJ!!! AJ, wake up!!! Please!!!" she cried, the tears streaming down her face. She checked for a pulse. There wasn't one. "Oh God, NOOOOOO!!!" She rocked him back and forth and wailed over his body until the Romanian police arrived and pulled her away from him.
"AJ! AJ!!!" she continued to scream as she was being pulled.
"I'm sorry," one of the officers said in a Romanian accent. "They're dead."
Denise sat in the police car, silently, watching the coroner take the bodies away. It didn't sink into her head yet. Her AJ gone forever? This couldn't be happening. The police officers drove her to the coroner's place so they could find out the causes of their deaths. It didn't take very long. The coroner came out of the corpse examining room and proceeded to explain to Denise and the officers. He couldn't speak English, so the officer translated.
The coroner began to speak rapidly in Romanian.
"These aren't some of the strangest cases he's had, he says," translated the officer. "It appears that the girl died of---"
"I don't mean to sound rude or insensitive," interrupted Denise, "but all I want to know is how my son died," she choked out.
"Of course. Well, they died of the same thing. Their were two small puncture holes on the sides of each of their necks. A lot of their blood had been drained. You could say they bled to death, but we found no appreciable amount of blood anywhere. It's all very strange."
Denise began to think back at what AJ and her had discussed before. "Not that strange."
"Excuse me?"
"You don't suppose it could've been…v-v-vampires?"
"Vampires, Mrs. McLean?"
"Yes."
"Sorry, but it's not as simple as that. Vampires don't exist."
"They had what looked to be fang marks on their necks and their blood had been drained! How else would you explain it?!"
"I don't know, Mrs. McLean. I honestly don't know."
