Chapter 12: The Reason
Kevin jumped up from the couch and tried to catch Reanna, but he was too
late.
Reanna went smashing into the table. The table came crashing to the floor as
Reanna’s
head made impact with the floor. Kevin nervously leaned down to see if she
had any head
injuries. When he leaned his head down to check, he lurched back away from
her. Brian
asked frantically, “What’s wrong!?” Kevin gestured to Reanna. Brian leanrd
forward and
then recoiled, “ Ughh, she reeks of alcohol!!” Kevin got up and went to
Nick. “Take
Dana outside and play with her, don’t let her come in until I come and get
you.” Nick
nodded slowly and went to get Dana who had watched the entire thing and was
now
sitting on the couch crying. As they left Kevin heard Nick telling Dana that
Reanna was
fine, she was just dizzy. ‘I hope she buys that lie.’ Kevin thought. A.J.
ran into the
kitchen and found the bottles and then ran back into the den. “Kev, look
what I found!”
He held up the bottle. Kevin cursed under his breath. Howie paced the floor
and said,
“Who would have Jack D on the bus?” Kevin took the bottle away from A.J. and
went to
confront Kent. His jaws were clenched tightly. He glared at Kent and held up
the botlle
as he demanded, “Is this yours!?” Kent eyed the bottle and quickly said,
“Yeah, but I put
them on the bus because I was hiding them from form my brother, he’s a
drunk. I guess I
forgot to get them off the bus.” Kevin snapped, “That’s just not something
you forget!
Reanna got a hold off them and now she’s passed out on the floor! Is there
any more!?”
Kent quietly answered, “There should be two more bottles.” With that Kevin
stormed off
to the kitchen. He flung open the cabinet and pulled out the bottles. He
poured them
down the drain and trew them in the trash. He went back into the den to find
Reanna on
the couch and Howie was applying a wet towel to her head. Kevin sat down at
the table
(or what was left of it) letting his thoughts boil in his head. He and
Reanna needed to
have a serious talk.
About ten minutes later, Reanna woke up. She felt like she had been ran
over by a
train, her head was throbbing, and her mouth was dry. She weakly tilted her
head and
looked around to see Howie on the end of the couch, Brian and A. J. trying
to fix what
remained of the table, and Kevin who sat at the remaining table chairs
glaring at her. As
soon as she made eye contact with him, he got up and walked over to her. His
voice
seemed to thunder in her head as he gruffly demanded, “Get up.” He said it
so harshly
that it sent a stinging jolt through her body. Kevin turned and walked into
the kitchen.
Reanna sat up and looked at Brian and A.J., before she could say anything a
wave of
sickness washed through her. She got up and stumbled into the bathroom, she
threw up
what felt like all of her insides. She sat their for a moment trying to stop
shaking. As she
sat there, she overheard Kevin talking to the others. “Guys, I’m not going
to the concert,
I’ve got to talk to Reanna. Take Dana with you guys.” “Okay, we’ll do it
Kev. Good
luck.” Brian said as they left the bus. There was silence now, Reanna didn’t
want to
come out because she didn’t want to be told what she already knew. She heard
footsteps
coming towards her, “ Reannna come out, we need to have a talk.” Reanna
reluctantly
came out. she followed Kevin into the kitchen. She sat down on the bed right
across from
him. She looked up at him, his stare was penatrating her mind, she felt
ashamed, she
looked away.
Kevin looked at her, he knew what he wanted to say, but all of it was mixed
up in
his head. There was an extended silence, then Kevin’s mind had an overload
of questions
that could no longer be silenced. “Why did you do it?! Don’t you use any
common
sense?! Drinking leads to no where! You of all people should know that!”
Kevin lectured.
Reannna looked up him through hurt eyes, that last remark had hurt. She
always said she
would never be like her father, but she had failed. She was resentful, ‘Why
should he
care?’ Reanna said everything that she had wanted to say from the very
beginning. “Why
should you care? You’ve never cared before, why should you care now?” Kevin
began to
say “I’ve always--” Reanna wouldn’t let him finish. “No, you let me finish,
You’ve got
no idea how long I’ve been unhappy, the only thing I had left that made me
remotely
happy was Dana, and you took her away from me, now I have nothing except
those
bottles in there.” Kevin shook his head and said, “No, you don’t, I got rid
of them, they
can do you no good.” Reanna’s eyes widened with disbeleif as she ran to
the cubbard.
She found nothing. She felt weak, her body was burning, it felt as if she
was numb from
the waist down. She slid down to the floor, she cried helpless to stop it.
Her depressed
mumbling cut deep into the Kevin’s brain, “I have no one, I want to die,
please take me
away.” Kevin’s heart hurt so much hearing her say that. He gently went
over and helped
her to the bed. She was trembling so bad, it scared him, he had never
imagined it being
so bad for her. He said quietly, “Reanna, you’ll always have me, I know
that you don’t
believe me but I will be there through thick and thin. I never realized how
much you
mean to me until this moment. I will help you through this and you’ll get
better. Just
know that if things are this worse, then they can only get better.”
Reanna looked up at him through sad eyes, and said, “I haven’t felt loved in
so long.”
Kevin now felt the tears well up in his eyes, he said, “I love you so much
and I’m sorry I
didn’t say it before.” Reanna had this filling feeling in her heart and
finally gave in to
her heart. She hugged Kevin, it made her feel like she was part of a family
again. She had
the euphoric feeling of knowing that everything would be fine. She was
finally safe from
her self torture.
