  Born in Wichita Falls in 1936, Larry McMurtry graduated with honors from high school in Archer City. If you saw the movie "Last Picture Show" or "Texasville" you saw his home town of Archer City featured prominently.

  Larry received his B.A. from North Texas State College and an M.A. from Rice University. He later lectured at Rice in English and creative writing. He has also taught at TCU, George Mason College, and American University. In 1969, he moved to the Washington, D.C. area to write. He opened the first "Booked Up" bookstore in Georgetown in 1970; there are now five others in Archer City, Texas, and still others in Tucson, Arizona.

  **** Take a drive out to Archer City to see Larry's five bookstores full of rare books. There's not much out there other than books, cows, and pumpjacks. However, they have built a new facade to the old movie theatre, the one from the movie, Last Picture Show. Plans on tap to build a garden where the inside of the theatre had been.****
