Shipping Losses around Filey Bay during the Great War
During the First World War, many casualties were inflicted in the North sea by German vessels hoping to slow supplies. It is unfortunate that not more detail could be given to the 109 known seaman who lost their lives in and around Filey Bay, but the records below list their ship, and if known how the vessel was sunk.

Sunk on 18th August after being torpedoed by an unknown U-Boat. Previously, on 30th June 1917 a U-Boat had again attacked but the torpedoes missed and the ship escaped unscathed.

The Seistan was torpedoed on 23rd Octover 1917 by U-Boat 57 under the command of Oberleutnant Johannes Lohs. The ship was a 4238 ton steamer carrying coal. UB 57 was later sunk on 14th August 1918, after claiming 76 'kills'.

Torpedoed by a U-Boat 5 miles SE of Filey Brigg on 21st July 1918 with a loss of all 36 hands. The Mongolian was a converted passenger liner that could hold 100 1st class passengers, 80 2nd class passengers and 1000 3rd class passengers. It was on its way to France to collect troops.
