I have stood on this corner for generations. I have seen many changes in my long life. Little boys who once walked with their father to the general store on the corner have grown up and worked at and later retired from the general store. Young boys who once hid behind me while playing “Cowboys and Indians” now lean against me and enjoy a cigarette.

I see the cute little redheaded girl who once played jacks right next to me. She is a blond now. My white iridescent light shines on her hair exposing her darker, red roots. It shines on her arms, revealing numerous track marks. It’s amazing how one can change so much in just ten years. A man pulls up in a car. He used to attend kindergarten at the school across the street. She walks to the car talks to the now grown man for a moment. Then she climbs inside the vehicle and they drive off to the hotel down the street. But I don’t judge. That is not my purpose. I am here to analyze. To shine my glowing light of truth is my purpose.

Yes I have seen many changes in my lifetime. Much like the buildings the people come and go. But I never forget a face, no matter how much it changes on the outside. On the inside they are still that same innocent, bright-faced little boy or girl who used to play here, so full of hopes and dreams. Some make it, some don’t. Ultimately, though, it’s up to them.
