Freshman Sires II

Last week we took a look at arguably the top three freshman sires. This week I will take a look at three more freshman sires. A couple that should produce good turf runners and maybe the most mysterious freshman sire this year.

Nayef – is by Gulch. His dam sire is Bustino (GB) and his dam’s dam sire is Queen’s Hussar (GB). He won nine races in sixteen starts from ages two to five. He won four grade I races from ten furlongs to twelve furlongs on turf in Europe. He did manage a third place finish in the Dubai World Cup on Dirt. Tough guy who competed well with Golan, Falbrav, Islington and Moon Ballad.

Being from the Mr. Prospector line and not having any Northern Dancer in his pedigree I would imagine Northern Dancer line mares will be the most popular choice and maybe the best choice. Other lines that should blend well would be the Never Bend, Ribot, Seattle Slew and Roberto lines. A variety of choices could work well with this versatile pedigree.

At this point there are only 18 young runners for Nayef. Nayef has a couple of expensive dam sires but has been mostly bred to cheaper sires. Eight runners debuted on dirt and the fastest was a 50. Another seven have started on turf the fastest ran a 66. Four of the seven were 50+ on the turf. Northern Dancer line mares were used in breeding of about half the runners. His runners should run well as two year olds but may take some time to develop.

High Chaparral – is by Sadler’s Wells. His dam sire is Darshaan (GB) and his dam’s dam sire is Kris (GB). He was never worse than third and won nine of eleven career starts. Won the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and Breeder’s Cup Turf twice. He was a grade I winner at two, three and four. He won grade I races at 8f, 10f and 12f.

His pedigree has a good deal of stamina. Raise a Native line sires seem a good fit (Mr Prospector, Affirmed & Alydar). Seattle Slew, Roberto, and Blushing Groom line mares seem very good fits. Breeding him back to speed type sires may be popular in the Sim. Breeding back to the Northern Dancer line will also be a popular choice.

Early results appear good for High Chaparral. He has been paired with mostly top end dam sires. 18 of his 22 runners have run already on turf. He had two run 73 speed figures already one By Diesis (GB) and one by El Condor Pasa. Another seven runners ran between 57-66 speed figures. One runner has tried dirt and that was a 53-speed figure. Almost all the big names are represented as dam sires like Forty Niner, Storm Cat, Affirmed, King Mambo, Blushing Groom, Seeking The Gold and Unbridled. High Chaparral should do well as a sim sire.

Authenticate- is by Gone West. His dam sire is Seattle Slew and his dam’s dam is Alydar. He is unraced. In 2000 he was purchased as a yearling for 3.3 million dollars by Padua stables. So how do you go from being purchased for 3.3 million dollars in 2000 to standing stud on a small farm in Texas in 2004 for $3,000 a live foal?

People in the Sim have taken notice of the pedigree and breed to him 15 times already. Northern Dancer line mares would seem the best choice to breed with Authenticate. Ribot, Roberto, and Turn-To lines would seem to solid choices as well. Looks like he will get a chance to show how well of a producer he can be. Already Arazi, Pine Bluff, Nureyev, Danzig and Fairy King have been used as dam sires.

Early results are ok. Only eight of his fifteen runners have run so far. Seven of those ran on dirt. The fastest ran a 66-speed figure. Another three were between 55-63. His one turf starter ran a 51 in her debut.

High Chaparral looks well on his way to being a good Sim stud. Nayef has not been bred as well as I thought he would be but he seems to have good potential. One of the most mysterious new studs is off to an ok start at stud but will Simmers continue to breed him to top mares?
