Sega Channel!! The Greatest Innovation in Gaming History!

Sega channel is the coolest idea in video games ever! Never before has an idea like this been brought to life with such pleasure that I still to this day talk about how much I miss it with people... In fact just yesterday a new friend of mine IMed me cuz he happened upon the FuNnHoUsE looking for ninja turtle pies on the net. We started talking about all the great games from back in the day and the awesome glory that is Sega Channel came up. For everyone out there that doesn't know what Sega Channel is let me explain... first you have to pretend its 1994, "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "Ren and Stimpy" were still taking the air waves by storm with new episodes and the nWo was the hottest thing in wrestling.

Then Sega revolutionized games forever!! You call your cable company and demand they give you sega channel. They would give you a cartridge that you plugged the cable into and plug into the wall. And for the tiny tiny price of only $12.95 you got 30 YES 30 games to play whenever you wanted to!! It could be 5 am on a Tuesday or 12 noon on a Sunday and they were there for you to enjoy as much as you wanted! Plus the 30 games changed every month so just when you had played em all there were new ones for you to waste your life with! But it gets even better then that, you see every month they had a category called "Test Drives" where you could play games that weren't even out yet!! They were the only games on Sega Channel with a time limit but it was ok because when you had 5 games at your house that weren't out yet for months you were the coolest kid around even if they were only playable for a half hour!! One day I was able to beat Pinocchio 2 times in the half hour during it's test drive period!! Damn the game was short and easy...

But it didnt end there... we also got exclusive games! Yes you heard me right there were even games that were only on Sega Channel and no place else!!! We got "Mega Man: The Wily Wars", "Garfield: The Lost Levels", "Golden Axe 3", and the greatest of all unreleased games "Pulse Man".

It was the ultimate combination of Sonic and Mega Man. Pulse man was a man women wanted to be with and men wanted to be!! He was everything to everyone! A true lover and a great hero. Ok he was more of a running superhero that could shoot lightning but whatever...

Just looking at the screen shots you have to see just how cool the visuals were on Pulse man but it got better because the game played really good as well! It had it all!!! It want in a really heavy rotation on Sega Channel but when it was on I was all over it every time. Once I sat down to play it I would play it til it was done. I cant really think of any games I have ever beaten in one sitting besides maybe... no that's really about it. If you can find the ROM on the net or an import of it pick it up its awesome but now back to Sega Channel.

The only problem with Sega Channel was that the cartridges would burn out all the time and you had to get new ones like once every few months. But that was ok to because I was a kid so I would just send my dad to get it and I would stay home. When you picked a game it would take between 1 and 5 minutes to load up depending on how big the game was or how slow the it was connecting at. Mortal Wombat 3 was split into 2 because it was so big. I remember the first time I played it. It had "Mortal Wombat 3 A" and "Mortal Wombat 3 B". I was puzzled when I saw it. Was there some other MK3 that I knew nothing about?? Was it some sort of Sega Channel exclusive version of MK3 with more blood??? But no it was just that MK3 was to big and had to be split. "A" had the right half of the guys and "B" had the left. It kinda sucked because with it like that you couldn't have some guys fight other guys... but oh well Sega Channel still kicks some major ass. It was the very first Cable modem and nobody can ever take that away from the blue hedgehog!!

Unfortunately like most Sega innovations it never got the props it deserved and it faded away to live with Master System, PICO, 32X, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear and every other product Sega has made except the all mighty Genesis. At least Genesis was able to compete!

I just dressed myself with all this talk of Sega failures... Im gonna go drown my sorrows with a ninja Turtle pie I found behind my fridge and some crystal clear Pepsi. Have a nice day.
