Alan Idol's Top 10 of 2003

I've seen a total of 33 horror movies released this year. I saw a lot of crap, but a few sparkling gems as well.

1. 28 Days Later

I'va always been a sucker for post-apocalyptic movies, especially ones dealing with zombie-like creatures. Great effects, writing, acting and gore makes this one awsome flick and the must-see of the year.

2. Freddy vs Jason

I've been waiting to see this bad boy since they started talking about it over five years ago, and it was worth the wait. I was afraid it would be another disater like Jason X, but it ended up being a very entertaining horror film, with not as much humor as I expected.

3. Final Destination 2

You're talking to a man who has seen over 500 horror movies in less than 2 years, and I can tell you this movie has them all beat in the gore department. This sucker made me flinch no less than three times. Not all that great as far as story goes, but who is going to watch it for it's story value?

4. Cabin Fever

A demented and yet fun film to watch for us horror buffs. Some really crazy moments and scenes that really make for an "oh shit!" kind of atmosphere. Terrific effects and good writing as well.

5. House of 1000 Corpses

Yet another long awaited release that lived up to it's hype. The crazy ass characters, and off the wall humor made for a very twisted movie, that reminds me of old school Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

6. Willard

A remake of the 70's classic. I actually perefer this one over the original in almost every way. I liked the acting and character devlopment of the lead, and the menacing power of the army of gnawing rodents.

7. Wrong Turn

Another film that portrays a family of inbreed killer rednecks, but manages to make it work. Some very brutal death and gore scenes that could impress even the toughest of critics.

8. Gothika

A bit of a let down, but the movie is saved by it's above par acting and the mood it set in general.

9. Identity

This movie ended up being totally different from what I was expecting it to be. For those of you who have seen it you know what I mean. It was still a good movie, but it kinda knocked me off the track towards the end. Worth seeing for it's great acting and the atmosphere of the setting.

10. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Labled as a re-make but I don't really see how. I looked at it as just a new chapter in ther series, and it worked better that way. I liked the characters and the general setup of the movie, but it seemed to lack the mood of the previous films.

Top 5 Straight To Video of 2003

The three dreeded words; straight to video. Well I can tell you that just becasue it never gets released in the theatures does not necessarily make it bad. Ninty percent of the time, yes. But not all the time.

#1: May

A really lonely and twisted girl gets screwed over too many times by living people, so she decides to make her own friend out of human body parts. This was a great movie and showed a lot of depth to the main character, and the death scenes at the end were so good they were hard to watch.

#2: RSVP

A great intelligent slasher flick with a really awsome cast. Some of the death scenes were a lettle dull, but it's still one bad mamma jamma! Rent it.

#3: Bloody Murder 2

A great rebound from the original disaster. It had all around better death scenes, better story, less annoying characters, and my favoite... more nudity! Score!

#4: Snake Island

A much underrated movie about an island with thousands of killer snakes. You gotta give it props for useing real snakes even if they did dance a time or two.

#5: Cheerleader Massacre

A fun movie. Not created for great writing or plot, just for gore, dead bodies and boobs. If you rent this you know what you're getting yourself into, and there's nothing wrong with some fun chessy horror every once in a while.

*Note: Some of these movies may have different release years in other countries, but were widely released in the US in the year of 2003.
