Top 10 Horror DVDs for Christmas

1. Suspiria ( Limited Edition 3 disc set)

An awesome movie from Dario Argento. An American dancer goes to a European ballet school and discovers that something is really wrong. The DVD is excellent and jam packed with extra features. It's a 3 disc set. Disc 1 Features: Theatrical Trailers, TV Spot, Radio Spots, Daemonia Music Video ( pretty cool video ), Poster and Still Gallery ( some of this stills are just incredible ), and Talent Bios. Disc 2 Suspiria 25th Anniversary: a 52 minute documentary with the actors and writer/director Dario Argento ( a few insightful and interesting documentary ) Disc 3 Goblin Soundtrack CD ( awesome .. if you have heard anything from Goblin then you know what to expect here... the main theme is very scary) In addition to all that you get a booklet and lobby cards.

2. Evil Dead (Book Of The Dead Limited Edition)

Five friends go to a backwoods cabin for a vacation. They find a audio tape and when they play it evil forces are unleashed. Easily one of the greatest horror movies of all time gets a good DVD. Features: Commentary by director Sam Raimi and producer Robert Tapert and a separate commentary by horror icon Bruce Campbell ( really funny stuff here ... I usually do not care for commentaries much but these are the best I have heard ), Trailer, TV Sports, Poster And Still Gallery, Talent Bios, Fanalysis ( a very good 26 min documentary), Discovering Evil Dead, and Out-takes. The icing on the cake though, is the excellent case it comes in. It looks just like the book of the dead seen in the movie, even the inside has the pages seen in the movie. There is also a small booklet with pictures and more information about the movie. A must for any Evil Dead fan. When you put the book in the fridge for 10 minutes it feels like dead flesh.

3. Near Dark ( 2 disc set )

Near Dark is one of the best vampire films. Caleb is seduced by a girl and realizes she is no normal girl and Caleb gets stuck with a group of vampires. Features: Disc 1: Commentary by director Kathryn Bigelow. Disc 2: A 47 minute documentary featuring interviews with the director and the stars ( a fun documentary for fans of the movie ), Deleted Scene, Trailer, Still Gallery, and Talent Bios. If you have a DVD ROM there is also the original screen play and screen savers. The cover this movie comes in is awesome and there is a booklet with extra information.

4. Return Of The Living Dead

For the zombie fan you know Return Of The Living Dead would be the perfect gift. A deadly gas gets unleashed and wakes a lot of corpses making them brain hungry zombies. Features: Commentary from Director/Writer Dan OBannon and Production Designer William Stout ( I think Dan is a strange man but the commentary from him is very interesting ), Original Theatrical Trailer, and Designing the Dead Featurette ( talks about how movie is related to Night Of The Living Dead and other cool stuff ). What makes this DVD a great buy is that its only $10.00. So if your shopping for a horror fan with a limited budget this is the perfect answer. This film is presented in both wide screen and full screen.

5. Hannibal (2 disc set)

Sequel to Silence Of The Lambs. Hannibal comes out of hiding to talk to Clarice meanwhile one of Hannibal’s victims seek revenge. Hannibal is a compelling movie with plenty of suspense and gore. Features: Disc 1: Audio Commentary by Ridley Scott Disc 2 Alternate Ending ( unlike most DVDs this alternate ending changes a lot from the first ), 35 Minutes Of Deleted/Alternate Scenes ( most of these could have stayed in the movie and worked, maybe cut out due to how long the movie was running ), Breaking The Silence- Featurettes And Interviews, Anatomy Of A Shoot-Out ( really awesome, shows four different angles of the shoot-out scene in the beginning ), TV Spots, and a Still Photo Gallery. This one should please the more casual movie fan as well as hard-core horror fans.

6. The Others ( 2 disc set )

A great ghost story, one of the best horror movies to come out from 2001. A wife lives with her kids in a secluded island mansion while waiting for her husbands return form war. The kids start to fear they are not alone in the house. Features: ( all features are on disc 2 ) A documentary with interviews from the cast and crew of the film ( a good extra to watch, same like most documentaries), Visual Effects Piece ( nothing special here ), Xeroderma Pigmentosum ( talks about the disease that some kids have that prevents them from being able to go into the light, I never knew such a thing really existed ), Intimate Look At Director Alejandro Amenbar ( follows Amenbar as he directs the movie ), Still Gallery, and Trailer. Commentary would have been nice but this is a solid DVD.

7. Halloween

Halloween is simply a classic. Michael Myers murdered his sister on Halloween 15 years ago. He is taken to a mental hospital, he escaped the hospital to go after his sister. Features: Trailers, TV Spots, Halloween Unmasked 2000 Featurette ( informative detailed look of the production of the movie with interviews with cast ), and Still Gallery. This movie can be watched in wide screen or full screen.

8. Scream ( Collectors Series Edition)

The late 90s brang us a lot of good and a lot of horrible teen slashers, this is the supreme movie that started the trend. Nearly a year after the death of her mother Sidney dies, teens start being murdered. Now a group of teens must use their knowledge of horror movies to survive. Features: Commentary by Wes Craven And Kevin Williamson ( average commentary ), Trailer, TV Spots, Production Featurette ( Craven and the actors talk about how much fun it was doing the movies ), Behind The Scenes ( fun to see the guys mess around and Craven at work ), Q & A With Cast And Crew ( they talk about why people love horror movies so much and tell their favorite scary movies ), Special Effects Gallery, Cast And Crew Profiles, and Did You Know ( a bunch of fun facts about the film). All of the extras here are really fun to watch. If you like the entire trilogy then the box set is really good deal.

9. Dead Alive

This is one of the goriest movies of all time. After a rat monkey bites Lionel's mom she turns into a zombie, when mom infection gets out its up to Lionel to stop it. Features: Trailer. This DVD only offers a trailer but the pay off is that it is the unrated version. While its really slim on the features the unrated version of the movie is enough to please any zombie or horror fan.

10. Black Christmas

What better way to celebrate the holiday than watching a scary holiday movie. Black Christmas is about a crazy maniac who makes threatening phone calls, but what they do not know is that he's in the attic. Features: Trailer and cast bios. Black Christmas is the ultimate stalker/slasher film that comes in handy during the holiday season.

Top 3 Boxed Sets

1. Nightmare On Elm Street Boxed Set

Arguably the best horror series of all time. This set has all 7 films on DVD as well as an 8th disc with more special features. A maniac haunts people in their dreams but when they wake up they realize their nightmares are more real than they think. Features: Most of the DVDs have trailers and usual cast bios. The first and last has commentary by Craven. Freddys Dead has 3-D Glasses for the final scene. The 8th disc has music videos, commercials, interviews, and everything else you would want to know about the series. Also contains a booklet with information on each film. A must have for any fan.

2. The Ultimate Scream Collection

If you enjoyed all three films this is a perfect collection. It contains all three films on DVD as well as an extra film. The series continues as more people keep hunting down Sidney. Features: The discs have Out-takes, Commentaries, TV Spots, Alternate/Deleted Scenes ( the alternate scenes in Scream 2 work better for me ), Music Videos, Featurettes, and Behind The Scenes. The bonus 4th disc has a Documentary, Out-takes, Cutting Room ( edit your own scene they way you would like to - awesome ), Screen tests, and Trailers. If you have a DVD ROM there is also a Trivia Game and Screen saver. The collecters edition of the second film can only be found in the box set. Also comes with a booklet with extra information on the film.

3. Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit

All three films on DVD as well as a fourth disc with footage from the abandoned 4th film ( only if bought from Best Buy ). Kids can be so cruel, Angela goes to camp and when the kids cruel to Angela they end up being killed. Features: Theses movies have Commentaries, Galleries, Deleted Scenes, and trailers. Also has booklet with extra information. This collection is really cheap and can be found in most places for about $25.00. The 4th disc is really boring, its a really good thing the fourth wasn't made. If you want a good DVD box set and have a limited budget this is perfect.
