Maxine Elizabeth Frix Buckley, born 19 May 1908 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC, was the second of four children born to James Brownlee Frix and his wife, Hattie Warlick Payne. |
Her older
brother was Alton Glenn Frix, born 15 Jan 1905, also in Charlotte. |
When she was four years old, Maxine was bitten by a rattlesnake. Her father saved her life until the doctor arrived, by cutting the bite with his knife, sucking the poison, and spitting it out on the ground. Fortunately, he did not have an open sore in his mouth. |
When Maxine was eight years old, her family moved from Eagle Springs, NC to Richmond, VA. When Maxine was eight years old, her family moved from Eagle Springs, NC to Richmond, VA. They arrived on St. Patrick's Day of 1915. She always liked to point out the old train station where they came whenever we would pass it on the Interstate. When she was fourteen, Maxine met the apple of her eye, Robert Buckley. He was exactly seven months older than she was. They fell in love, and waited all through high school, college, and medical school before marrying. | Robert and Maxine were graduated from John Marshall High School in 1925. They both went to the University of Richmond. She attended Westhampton College for one year. . | Robert finished Richmond College, graduating in 1929, just months before the stock market crash which heralded the Great Depression. He still had four years of medical school at the Medical College of Virginia to go before they planned to marry

Margaret Ann Buckley, the couple's first child, was born on 6 Aug 1935 in Richmond, VA. When she was three days old, she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which left her severely retarded. | Although no cause was ever given, in her own mind she blamed it on the Nembutal she was given during labor. She never again allowed herself to be given drugs during childbirth - and these were the days before the Lamaze method was widely practiced. She was one tough cookie! |
Robert and Maxine's second daughter,
Eleanor Bruce Buckley, was born in Richmond, VA on 26 July 1941. They were 33 years old. |
Robert served as the Regimental Surgeon for the famed 29th Division during World War II. He returned home in Sep 1945, having been gone three years.

On Monday, 25 Apr 1960, Robert suffered a massive coronary
thrombosis, and died within minutes only a half-hour after arriving home
from work. Maxine always said he was killed in the war; it just took him
fifteen years to die. He was buried in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, VA. |
As soon as Shari learned to talk, she insisted on calling Maxine, "Baba" - and the name stuck. It would be several years before we were to learn that it actually meant "Grandmother" or simply "old woman" in several Slavic languages. | Baba was so much fun that Carol's friends from high school would ask her to accompany them whenever possible. Several of them would pile into her little Renault Dauphine and go "cruising" on Friday nights - much to the consternation of the passing boys - and the delight of the girls inside! |

They were both members of the William Byrd Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where they pursued their passion for genealogy. The two sisters devoted an enormous amount of time toward gathering donations for the DAR Mountain School. This effort demanded that they spend practically every Saturday attending yard sales - a hobby they both loved. |

I Am a Child of God, p.301 - Naomi W. Randall (© 1957 LDS)
I am a
child of God, And he has sent me here.
Has given me an earthly home With parents kind and dear.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.
I am a
child of God, And so my needs are great;
Help me to understand his words Before it grows too late.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.
I am a
child of God. Rich blessings are in store;
If I but learn to do his will I'll live with him once more.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.
