Meet Minxie
This isn't Minxie...but it looks like her when she was a kitten.
Minxie is a four-year-old American shorthair. She was adopted from a pet store. Despite being the cutest of the litter, no one wanted her because she was born with a heart murmur.
Minxie suffers from a very common feline heart problem called cardiomyopathy (for more info check Feline Cardiomyopathy). If diagnosed early enough, the prognosis for your pet is usually positive. Minxie was diagnosed during her first year. Although on medication twice a day for the rest of her life, it is likely that she will live out her full life span.
TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Besides her regular yearly visit to the vet, Minxie also has to get echocardiograms once a year to monitor the progress of the disease (so far, so good!). It can be difficult and expensive caring for a pet with a disease like hers. Please spay/neuter your pet. Although we adore Minxie, we also realize that there are many cats out there with the same condition who can't find a loving home. If untreated, this disease is deadly. Many strays don't have access to the care required. Minxie was spayed at 6 months. It was a day-long procedure, and although she had some discomfort after the surgery, she recovered very quickly!
- Remember to take any new pets to the vet for a thorough check-up.
- Know where to take your pet in case of an emergency. Here's a decent directory of emergency pet clinics for reference: Pet Emergency
- Know what to do if your pet needs help right away:Pet First Aid
Today Minxie is a lively, rambunctuous, and affectionate cat. We hope she remains this way for many and many years!
