Pirate -(from the Latin pirata) 1. A robber on the high seas; one who by open violence takes the property of
another on the high seas; especially, one who makes it his business to cruise for robbery or plunder
Bucanneer - (from the French boucaner, to smoke or broil meat and fish, The name was first given to the French
settlers in Haiti or Hispaniola, whose business was to hunt wild cattle and swine) 1, A robber upon the sea, a
term applied especially to the piratical adventurers who made depredations on the Spaniards in America in the 17th and 18th
centuries.
Freebooter - (from the Dutch vrijbuiter, vriji=free buit = booty) One who plunders or pillages without the authority of national warfare
Corsair - (from the Latin cursus, a running or course) 1. A pirate; one who cruises about without authorization from
any government, to seize booty on sea or land. 2. a pirate along the Barbary coast
Privateer- (from Private) . An armed private vessel which bears the commission of the sovereign power(letters of marque) to
cruise against the enemy.
Filibuster - (from the Spanish flibustero, corrupted) 1. A lawless military
adventurer, especially one in quest of plunder; a freebooter; -- originally applied to pirates infesting the Spanish American
coasts
