SHINTY BALLS

Shinty is an old Gaelic Scottish ball game, originating form the Celts. They called it camanachd, the "sport of the curved stick", a game designed to exercise warriors. The first official rules of the game were presented by the Glasgow Celtic Society in 1879.

The game is played with two teams of 12, and takes 2 x 45 minutes. Both sides of the field have a goal.
Each player has a curved stick, a caman. The ball is made of stitched leather and has a diameter of 7.5 to 8 inches, and weighs 2.5 to 3 ounces. Only the goal keeper can touch the ball with his hands. The other players can only use the stick to hit, push or stop the ball. A variant of shinty is played in Ireland. It's called hurling there. Amended rules exist, so that both hurling- and shinty-players can play together! What a sport!

Shinty is a popular game for Scottish youth too.
