The game is played with two teams of 12, and takes 2 x 45 minutes. Both
sides of the field have a goal.
Each player has a curved stick, a caman. The ball is made of stitched
leather and has a diameter of 7.5 to 8 inches, and weighs 2.5 to 3 ounces. Only
the goal keeper can touch the ball with his hands. The other players can only
use the stick to hit, push or stop the ball. A variant of shinty is played in
Ireland. It's called hurling
there. Amended rules exist, so that both hurling- and shinty-players can play
together! What a sport!
Shinty is a popular game for Scottish youth too.
