theory
charles darwin, while returing from his trip to the galapagos islands, proposed the idea that mankind evolved from primates in the course of millions of years. the islands remained uninhabited for centuries, and darwin realized this. the animals on the islands had adapted to their climate and geography. this must be true for humans as well.
what would jesus do?
church-goers were outraged everywhere, as you can imagine. but as science improved, darwin's theories were improved and thus, accepted. a split in beliefs was formed yet again, and "christianity" had to adapt to science, like usual. however, there are a lot who disbelieve (still) darwin's theories and think the origins of man have nothing to do with monkeys. apparently we're too good for that.
my personal opinion
it has been known that humans are the most selfish and inconsiderate creatures on earth. yet, it takes selfishness to survive. because humans have evolved into a state of "living" and not simply "surviving," we have become selfish unto ourselves. we have a sense of "pride" and feel the need to put ourselves out of the same book as all the other creatures because we have evolved so "perfectly." we do not respect other creatures with the power we have, but merely manufacture them as our food for "living." it is clear that because of our abilities to create and manipulate, we have become the top species, but that doesn't mean we need to overthrow the rest of the world with ourselves. there are six billion of us. our living has become multiplying and killing. we are using up our land as fast as we are creating the next weapon of mass destruction. we fight over simple opinions with total annihilation of each other. this is just simple monkey fighting (kubrick's 2001) on a different level - a level where we use our heads to use our hands. intelligence creates power, and the power is given to strength. if we weren't so caught up in our daily lives of complete nothingness that doesn't benefit anything whatsoever, we might be able to appreciate the earth for what it truly is to us. selfishness is not the answer, and that's why pessimism is needed in this world. without a view that doesn't take "pride" in what we are, we would be blind assholes.
