Technological superiority
Technology is no doubt a very important factor in this game. You may discover that a highly technology-advanced empire with a very small armada of ships can easily overtake a large but technology-backward empire.
Various other species
There may be various other alien species out there unknown or known to you. Each will have their own special characteristics, their own special genetic makeup. Once you have reached a certain technological level you can even start playing with your genetic makeup. But be wary with playing around with your species genetic build up.
