* Any high quality dog or cat food will do preferably a holistic food or one without any non-specific meats or cancer causing preservatives such as BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin. Remember to use less if choosing a cat food instead of a dog food since cat food contains much higher levels of fat and protien. However, at least 1/4 of mix should be a quality dog food and/or quality lab block such as Harlan Teklad, Mazuri or LM Farms.
**Use in moderation due to high fat content(walnuts are an excellent source of omega fatty acids)
***Most common cereals contain BHT and/or BHA as a preservative. Cheerios, Kashi and Cascadian Farms brand cereals do not and I definitely prefer these brands to most others. It makes no sense to avoid these preservatives in the dog food, yet add it back in with the cereal ingredients.
NOTE: There are many pre-made commercial rat food mixes to choose from which you can find at most pet stores, however, many of these are not properly suited to a rat's specific dietary needs. If you choose not to mix your own and prefer to buy a ready-made mix, Elliott recommends Oxbow Regal Rat food.
